Griz, I gotta know........

did you ride the bull???? :-)

April 12th sounds fine to me! And I would be interested in doing Saturday and Sunday.....my trigger finger's gettin' itchy.

The 12th works for me, but I too would like to nail something down soon.

I'm good with the 12th.

The Caves were outside the box for sure, I just wanted to sling it out there. The Meremac gets really high, and dangerous alot of the time in April anyway. And I agree, maybe not the best idea.

I will do some research this morning, and post back with some locations that get alot of bang for the buck.

So far it would appear Drewbix has some sweet ideas, and I'm really excited to check out some of those locations.

Ok...in spearheading fashion...let's nail down April 12-13. Today is Wednesday (03/05/08). We will leave the date open for discussion until Friday (03/07/08) at noon, then nail it down and work on locations. Is that enough notice for everyone?

So far we have a lot of interest in this date:
' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' griz210 ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' ladyhawk22 ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' brizmama ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' drewbixcube ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' chaimelle ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' MattO

If we can get 10-15 people (including spouses/kids) I think we could swing some group discounts or special arrangements at various places. I have a few contacts around the city and might be able to pull some strings when we decide where we want to go.

Who else can make it one or both of these days? And are there any other suggestions for dates?

I will work from ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit's list of locations and combine some of the ones that can be seen together (within walking/short driving distance), as well as provide any costs associated with them (parking/admission/etc).

Here are some options that are close to each other (within 5-10 minutes drive), as well as websites and pricing for everything I could find. If there is no price listed...it should be free parking and admission.

I left out Grant's Farm because it will not be open yet (same as last year), as well as the festival of flowers in St. Charles (it will not be happening in April), and the State Parks/Mills/Wine Country/Conservation Areas mentioned earlier (to keep things closer to St. Louis).

Short drive from Zoo to Botanical Gardens. Botanical Gardens butt up to Tower Grove Park.
Zoo
--$10 parking per car, plenty of free parallel spaces along streets near all entrances
Botanical Gardens
--$8/adult
--Free 12 and under
Tower Grove Park

You can park in one place (street lot ~$5-$10) and walk to just about all these places
The Arch
--$7/adult, $3/child ticket to the top of the Arch
Eads bridge
Lacledeís Landing
Downtown Courthouse and fountain

Short drive (just down the street) from one to the next.
Lafayette Square (known for Victorian Architecture)
Soulard Farmerís Market

You could probably squeeze these two together (they are only a few minutes apart and throw them in with other downtown attractions, but I thought the Arch list was getting a little long, and I was trying to lump those places together within walking distance).
Union Station
--Hourly Parking Fee
Busch Stadium

Riverfront/The Levy (an art canvas for street grafitti) Very cool! There is talk of maybe setting up a little portrait shoot here. It is not within walking distance from the Arch, but is easily driveable (about a mile or so). Some have expressed interest in finding models/make-up artists at Model Mayhem to TFCD or modeling ourselves. I don't have any experience with MM...so I will leave this up to anyone who does. If you want to set up a model, feel free and we can work the get together around it.

Places that would make good stops, but are far enough apart that I have singled them out from groups:

Faust Park
-Butterfly House Costs:
--$6.00 General admission
--$4.50 Seniors (65+)
--$4.00 Children 4-12
--$3.00 Missouri Botanical Garden members from Senior to Sponsorship levels
--Free Children 3 and under

Sculpture Park

Anheiser Busch Brewery and Tour
--Free tour, free beverage (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) samples at end of tour

St. Louis City Museum
--~$5 Parking
--$8 3yrs-Adult
--$6 World Aquarium (in addition to museum admission)

Cahokia Mounds State Park just across the river in Illinois
--Free admission, $2 donation suggested

Great idea griz. I think we can absolutly accomodate this and it is a great point (avoiding harsh light). About every group of places has a place where indoor shots can be taken and maybe lunch had.

I could totally get into doing some portraiture with the urban graffiti theme. It's something I'm really trying to work on, but seem to fail getting time to do. And I love fish, so the aquarium sounds fantastic as well.

Really I just want to see everyone again and have a great time taking photos! I'll be pretty happily amused regardless of what we do.

Damn Drew! Nice work...I think I'll print this list for future reference.

I like that idea Liz I wonder if we could get everybody in the GTG out there for a portrait session, and then build some neat project out of it. Just thoughts.

The Levy that I spoke of wouldn't be walking distance from the Arch, but it is to the far right (looking towards the river), and it stretches over a mile on a gravel road if I remember right.

I like the portraiture idea too. So this means you will be our model right?

I like the idea of a portrait session as well. I wonder if we could do either an available light or a studio thing if we could find a place to setup and have power. I do have 2 speedlights and an ST-E2 to trigger them, I also have mobile studio setup with AB's and triggers. But we would need a place to shoot with power and some willing models. I am available right now the weekend you folks have chosen, I will stay with this thread until it is all decided.

We might check on Model Mayhem for a couple of TFP models and possibly a make-up artist. I can look into that if anyone would like me to, I haven't really contributed yet :)

I have an additional speedlight and dedicated tripod for it. As well as AB's (wireless) if we want to make a big production out of it. Just need to find a site member with portable power sources and we'd be set!

I thought about MM, but have never used it. If you can find folks and want to try and set something up, we could work the rest of the GTG around it or have some people do loaction shoots while others roam downtown. If you need me to scope the location for you (North/South/East/West, time of day, etc) let me know. It is on my way to and from work and I go by several times a day if making deliveries.

I'm currently negotiating a used Vagabond battery source to add to my kit now. I'm not sure I can swing it, but I'm working on the finances.

South of the Arch? On the Missouri side?

Nice! The original or the new V2? I am thinking a new V2 might make a good investment...I might pick one up this summer (after I make some money on sports pics).

I'll check out MM and let you know as soon as possible.

Its on the MO side, looking at the river to the far right. That road out front of the arch, I think Front St., that road actually ends where a gravel road picks up, and its right there that the art starts, and carries on for about a mile.

Ok we are going to try to finalize the date today at noon.

So we are looking at April 12-13. Speak now or forever hold your peace ;-p

Alright let's nail down the date for April 12 and 13. Mark your calendars and we can start planning where/when/what we want to shoot.

I'm in for the date. Just let me know where I need to be and what time. I'd also like to know what we are going to be shooting so I can make sure I bring the right gear!
