Really I just want to see everyone again and have a great time taking photos! I'll be pretty happily amused regardless of what we do.

I like the portraiture idea too. So this means you will be our model right?

Lol. Sure! If you want. Don't know how great I'd be, but I will say that it's been a LONG time since anyone took a photo of me that I actually like :-) Could have to do with the fact that I'm just not a model "type" (read: I like to eat food!)

And I'm in for that whole weekend hopefully. Hubby can hang with me or with his fam and I can be happy shooting all day saturday and sunday :-) So I'm up for a little bit of everything!

Yeah I just got off the hook for dog-sitting that weekend. I hope we can hatch out a plan that will take up Saturday (including food) with tons left to do on Sunday.

I'd say that you are doing a good job so far filling the days with suggestions. I have confidence that you will have no issues making an agenda to fill both days.

Matt

BTW I spoke with my family about this today and they were excited to go out with a bunch of nerds with cameras, errr I mean photographers again!
03/09/2008 01:10:26 AM · #57
Matt, your family was awesome! It was so fun hanging out with them at the zoo...I hope they come along this time too. And, if we can't find models, I say we ALL put on our "model hats". After all, most of us probably spend so much time behind the lens that it's hard to find pictures of ourselves! So we can always rectify that :-) I know I've got a couple different hats in my closet I can bring ;-)

I'm excited! Great planning Drew! Can't wait to meet everyone.

Bump and wondering if we have set an agenda yet?

Personally, I wouldn't mind visiting:
Zoo, Botanical Gardens, The Arch Area/Laclede's Landing, Downtown Courthouse

I don't think there is too much to photograph here, besides a little architecture...maybe a semi-scenic shot:
Busch Stadium (outside isn't that interesting...could try to find a way inside if there is interest)
Anheiser Busch Brewery and Tour
Lafayette Square
Union Station (I go here often for work...not to much for me to see)
Soulard Farmerís Market (I've been to the market for a photography class)

I think these places are too seperate to get the most out of our time:
Faust Park
Sculpture Park

An example of a day's itenerary could be:
1. Meet at the zoo in the morning to catch big animals up, around, and moving.
Zoo is BIG (it took all day last GTG and all day for our photography class). So we would want to move along fairly quickly and catch the big cats, bears, etc moving around before they go into lazy mode.
2. Then grab some lunch (at the zoo, or in Forest Park). This will help kill time with harsh light out.
3. Then head to Botanical Gardens/Tower Grove Park (shaded areas will help alleiviate harsh light).
4. Part ways for those only wanting to spend one day, head home to families, or end the second day.
5. The rest maybe grab dinner and/or possibly hit ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit's secret spot to catch downtown STL as the sun sets behind the Arch (sunset approx. 7:35 pm).

-and/or-

1. Meet at Soulard in the morning catch vendors setting up, busy shopping time.
2. Head down the street to grab some Arch shots and people/buildings at Laclede's Landing.
3. Grab lunch on the landing (Old Spagetti Factory...good food and lots of cool stuff inside...very photographer friendly).
4. Hit the old courthouse inside to avoid some harsh mid-day lighting.
5a. Maybe work in a model shoot at ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit's levy (once lighting is not an issue).
5b. Hit some other nearby locations (Stadium/Union Station/Lafayette Square).
5c. Hit Faust Park Butterfly House.
6. Part ways for those only wanting to spend one day, head home to families, or end the second day.
7. The rest maybe grab dinner and/or possibly hit ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit's secret spot to catch downtown STL as the sun sets behind the Arch (sunset approx. 7:35 pm).

Anyway, just some examples that I think are pretty do-able, with plenty of options. If the out of towners really want to hit the zoo, but can't make the early drive, we put it in the second day when everyone will be traveling locally. We can make just about anything work...just hope it isn't rainy/cold like last year's Saturday! (knock-on-wood)

I really like the first agenda that you have for the saturday part of the GTG if possible, those are all things that are relatively easy for us to do with Brandon and he would really enjoy them. Then if I can swing the second day I could do it on my own if they didnt want to trek along for the second day. Do we have models?

I agree with Matt, i like what you listed for the first day also. If we can get models we might have to work around there schedules.

Just keep us posted it all looks good to me.
thanks for all your work Drew

Alright, I know for sure there are portrait set-ups at the zoo, and botanical gardens, and then the Graffitti at the River could be a possibility as well.

As for Models, I have two nieces (15)(12), and one nephew(18) that is looking for some senior photos. Not models but willing. My wife will be there, and she could stand in, but she's a little bit stiff, it'd take somebody with a light personality to loosen her up.

I'm having trouble thinking of things to bring, or what to expect with a portrait day. The equipment's easy I could simply pack a 50mm, but I don't know about like make-up, or scarfs, or hats, or outfits. What should I be looking to bring? I mean I don't mind pushing a baby stroller around with some get-up, but what?

As for models I could get more, but I don't have a bus.

I'm off to study Librodo's portraits, AGAIN! LOL.

Hi everyone, I havenít been on much the past few days and wanted to let everyone know why. On the way home from work Thursday I stopped to check on my mother who is 83 and lives alone and found her asleep on her bed and couldnít wake her. It appears her blood sugar dropped very low and has done brain damage. I have been with her the entire time, The doctors donít think she will be with us much longer but no one knows for sure. So I donít know how much I will be on the next week or so. If things work out I still hope to join you guys for the gtg, and if I can make it I have a friend from our local camera club who may join me. So keep the plans rolling and if It works out I will join you.

Sorry for the long post but just wanted you guys to know what had happened in case I cant get back on(right now I have wifi in her room but things could change at any moment) and donít get to make it up on the 12th

I am still looking for models but I also like Elizabeth's suggestion of just shooting each other or the "victims/models" we drag along with us :D it saves time and hassle and we can keep it a little more relaxed and fun. Jason, I've found useful props tend to be just what you suggested, scarves... accessories... hats... flowers... balloons... food... whatever works or is onhand. I will bring some and my make-up kit as well, just in case.
03/17/2008 12:17:12 AM · #68
I've got some makeup and makeup samples (used to sell MaryKay) that I could probably bring too. Plus I might bring some hats, umbrellas, scarves and the like.

Griz--I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. If there's anything I can do, just let me know.

Dave, sorry to hear about your mother. I will include you both in my prayers.

As to the gtg locations, I also like:
Zoo, Botanical Gardens, The Arch Area/Laclede's Landing, Downtown Courthouse

I'm not really interested in a model shoot.
03/18/2008 04:43:23 PM · #71
It looks like two popular options are:

The Zoo/Botanical Gardens/Tower Grove Park

-and-

The Arch/Laclede's Landing/Downtown Courthouse

I know the Arch/Laclede's Landing/Courthouse won't take up all day but a good half (if not through lunch). But the Zoo/Botanical Gardens/Tower Grove will probably be an all day event, given the huge amount of material to shoot and ground to cover!

So my questions are...Does everyone like these ideas (there are plenty more to choose from, these just keep coming up)? Who is planning on a two day extravaganza?
