You guys in St Louis need to quit do the rain Dance and start praying for dry weather this weekend. The weather forcast sucks. So let's all send positive thoughts for good weather

We cannot catch a break!

Weather.com has us for Rain/Snow Showers Saturday. Didn't this happen to us last year?!? Next time we will schedule some indoor event (studio photo-shoot or something) and it will be perfect outside. Everybody West of us, stick a fan outside, aim it East, and turn it on HIGH!

Oh this isn't good! I'm so sick of cold and wet weather! Gimme back the sunny 70s!

Phone number PM's will go out tomorrow afternoon. If you think you will need to get ahold of anyone (besides me...I'm giving mine out like candy) then please PM me your number, I will add it to the list and send the list to those on it.

Also, keep your eyes peeled in the thread. I am planning on posting a couple maps so people will know where to meet each morning, and the places we will be going each day.

Got the PM with numbers. Are we still making the trek if it rains? Do we have any alternate plans for wet weather? Weather looks really crappy. Why cant we catch a break with this weather?

I honestly don't have a clue what to do if it rains on us Saturday. I know the Zoo has indoor facilities (primate, reptile houses etc.) I doubt that would make for many portrait opportunities. I think there are a few places at the Botanical gardens that are inside. I am hoping the weather man keeps pushing this stuff back...earlier in the week all this rain was supposed to be done by Saturday...now they have pushed it back into the weekend. At least they stopped calling for SNOW!

Can anyone else think of a contengency plan for Saturday?

Is it possible to put it off till the following weekend?

04/10/2008 10:25:46 PM · #136
What about inside Union Station, there are a few places in there for portrait work plus they have restaurants in case people get hungry. There is even a pond outside that is partially covered and the water fountain out front if it isn't raining to hard or has a lull. I'll try to brain storm for some other inside venues.

Next weekend might work for some of the local folks...I would have to skim back through the thread to see who was definately busy next weekend (besides me...I've got a gymnastics team, engagement session, family portraits...oh yeah, and they are all 4 hours away). But I think the out of towners and models have kind of put a lot of eggs in this "basket".

Union Station could work. The pond is partially covered by a "roof" and their are some okay little fountains and coin ponds inside, unless we go into the ball room. I know the guy that manages the place. I will call him tomorrow and ask if there is anything going on in the great room. They might serve food there, I am not sure. If we were already downtown we could hit the inside of the courthouse (we already had that planned for Sunday, but if it is going to be pretty cloudy (but dry) Sunday we wouldn't be forced inside to avoid harsh light. I will brainstorm as well and watch the weather.

I'm going to be upfront, if the weather is cold and rainy at all on saturday I am going to bow out for that day. I cant take a chance of exposing Brandon to those conditions. If we get a bit warmer or no rain, then I'd say I can make that day. I'm still going to try sunday either way. If I do make it saturday, I'm going to have to leave a bit early as I had to reschedule a photo shoot to saturday evening. and I have to put up the "home studio" before my client arrives. EIther way I'm hoping for good weather and being able to see you all this weekend.

Drew
another idea if we have models is if you know of a multi level parking garage that is not full on the weekends they can be out of the rain and make for some nice light for portraits. I don't know St Louis so i don't have a clue where to find one.
04/11/2008 10:38:53 AM · #140
Just sent PM's to those that haven't really expressed their interest/disinterest after reading the forecasts, and I sent messages to the models. I am trying to see who else is having second thoughts due to the weather.

Griz, there are quite a few parking garages around downtown.

Anyone else have any good ideas for staying dry?

Erin added a couple more models, so it looks like we are still a go. brizmama and griz are coming for sure. And if they are going to make the trek, then I will brave the elements with them. I guess we should all plan on meeting up at the zoo in the morning. If it looks like it will get nasty outside, we will move inside somewhere...inside at the zoo, inside at the botanical gardens, etc. So I guess pack a jacket and some long pants and we will see you all in the morning!

Also for those meeting us Sunday we will be near the intersection of Chouteau and South Lenard K Sullivan Blvd (which runs right between the arch and the river) around 9:00. If it is looking nasty out we might have to move inside. But let's start here on Sunday and we can make decisions as a group. Check the maps I posted for directions.

I have made a decision. I am definately out for saturday. Although that is the day that I wanted to make the most. We are going to spend the day with Brandon out of the rain and cold. But my wife and I have a sitter for sunday and we will be there ready to go. What are the plans for sunday that we can do if it rains? Either way I'll be there sunday.

Just watched the news, not a good forecast for tomorrow. Its going to be a cold one! I pray the fruit trees wont be harmed again this year! I miss the apple harvest! I was hoping to shoot the flowering trees in the Oriental gardens. Would love to see blooming cherry trees. I am so conflicted on going or not. How many are still planning on going?

04/12/2008 01:34:54 AM · #145
Guess I better get to sleep. I and my crew will see you in the morning at the zoo. Fox 2 is showing a dry and cold start in the morning with chance of light showers. I guess we will see how everything looks in the morning and go from there. See you around 9!

I am on my way to STL, I am running a little behind but I will be there not too long after 9. Looking forward to a great day!

It doesn't look too bad outside. I can see the sun and some sky to the east, but it is overcast to the west and north. radar is showing some stuff over iowa now that is swirling (anchored over one of the great lakes) down this way. I guess we will see. I'll be at the zoo around 9.

Alright, Looks good outside so far, I'm going to get ready and see you there.
If it gets to cold for me, I may have to leave early. But we'll see.
Looking forward to meeting you all.

Weather in my area this morning is going to cause us a late start. I'm hoping we can still get out in time to make it today!! I'll keep you posted!

We got a late start this morning, but I think everything went pretty well. By the time I got my crew rounded up and to the zoo, we met up with ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' griz210, Riannon, and Colleen. Then Sarah, Tanya and Meena joined us. We debated a few areas to shoot to stay out of the cold, but decided to start in front of the waterfall, pond and sea lion statues at the South entrance. ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Tlemetry joined up with us as we filed some of the girls through a quick session in front of the waterfall, followed by some nice group shots on the statues. A friend of Sarah’s met up with us and we headed for warmer places. The girls made some wardrobe and make-up adjustments in the insect house while we photographers waited for our glass to warm and keep from fogging upon entering the Butterfly Dome.

A couple of zoo employees asked if the portraiture was "official"...we told them we were hobbyist. There was a large group of Boy Scouts in the insect house at the time we arrived and it was a little crowded. The zoo people were a little worried about congestion, but the scouts moved on and crowd died down. Griz was getting some great shots with his flashgun off camera, so I decided to get the girls (and griz) some quality shots and play “lightman” for a while. We pulled the girls through the butterfly dome one at a time (being sure not to block any other visitors' view), and I let griz and tlemetry do their thing.

' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' brizmama caught up to us here and she jumped right in directing her model and getting some great shots. It was here that I had to leave the group, as my crew (who had walked a lot of the zoo by now) was weary and hungry. So we left the models in very capable hands and headed out to show my brother the town.

There was talk of heading to the “Jewel Box” or other similar location to shoot pictures after lunch. I do not know if ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' ladyhawk22 or ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sacredspirit showed up after I left. But I am interested to hear what all transpired after I had to leave.

After grabbing lunch I took my crew downtown. We went to scout the graffiti wall. The Mississippi is WAY UP and has a couple of streets closed down in Laclede’s Landing, as well as the flood walls sealed. You can still reach graffiti wall from Chouteau or from driving right under the Arch on South Lenard K Sullivan Blvd. We drove down the road a ways, checking out the art on the high walls. It should be a great backdrop for tomorrow’s portraits! There is plenty of space to park and work. And the area looks safe and regularly visited.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. It sounded like there were quite a few models going to return for Sunday’s session. Hopefully there will be some more photographers to go around.

See you around 9 at Graffiti wall.
