There's been a lot of talk in the Future of DPC/DPL thread about what motivates people to join/participate in this community. In the midst of said discussion ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' sulamk mentioned

which got me thinking about if/how peoples photography skill do improve with the help of DPC. I assumed it would, but being an engineer, I needed proof.

So I had a look at the profiles of the top 5 favourite photographers; ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' heida, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' librodo, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' kiwiness, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Joey Lawrence and ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', '/') + 1) . ' scalvert to see if these great photographers started out great or improved over time, some of which may be attributable to DPC. I copied the stats for their challenge entries into a spreadsheet and plot them against the date of the challenges and got the following.

' . substr('//kekoc.com/wp/wp-content/dpc-mostimproved.gif', strrpos('//kekoc.com/wp/wp-content/dpc-mostimproved.gif', '/') + 1) . '
(Please note this image is hosted on my own domain... if any members would like to add it to their workshop etc and let me know where it's located on DPC, I'll be happy to edit the URL, which should improve the upload speed etc of the image.)

As you can see, DPC current "favourite photographer" ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' heida was getting sub 5 scores when she started here... and now look at her... and ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Joey Lawrence was getting sub 4's... now he's in the Top 5 favourite photographers here. Even ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' librodo and ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', '/') + 1) . ' scalvert, have improved over their time here even though they started from higher bases... not sure why ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' kiwiness bucks this "Improvement Trend"... I'd reason that it might be the fact that his average and participation rate was so exceptionally high at the beginning... anyway... the exception that proves the rule perhaps.

Anyway, I found this interesting and I thought you might too. I know I'll be thinking of this when I'm getting down about my next low score in a challenge... which happens to be now with my entry in "Pollution". Nevermind... there's hope for me yet :)

Thanks for your effors, vlado.
I believe you, but man that's hard to read! :-)
Maybe it would be easier if the symbol colors matched the linear colors.

By the way, where *is* Heida? I know she dropped out of the SC because of the time commitment, but I hope she hasn't left the site entirely.

well, everyone shows an improvement except for Heida (i think) who's score has dropped slightly.

I know DPC helped me, but i think mainly because it inspires me to think that I could always be better and always do better when i see some of the stuff on the site. Granted, i don't submit my work into the challenges for legal reasons but i know I've got better every session I have and DPC has helped me pick and choose the things I like/dislike to merge into my own style and workflow. That's the most important thing- discovering your style.

I think you should use the percentile in challenge rather then the score value. It would not doubt show a similar slope but I think it's a better measure. Interesting that J has the steepest slope.... makes sense since he started early enough....

Very interesting trends..If you are interested in the trend of just your average ordinary user and not one of the super powers then here is my trend. If I can have an upward trend then that should really motivate you! I have not been here that long so I don't have as much data though...

My recent decision, around the middle of last year to start entering more of what I like and shooting less of what I think others will like is really paying off in spades.

Wow, that is quite a change. I just looked at your earlier percent placements. Usually above 60% everytime. Now that you are putting in what you like, the scores are much more unpredictable. I find that most interesting. It proves that there are two ways to take photos. One way is to take the popular style that scores well, and the other is to do what you like. I guess what works best is if you take pics that are popular and that you also really find satisfaction with.

I assume you folks are using the DPC tracker on the community projects page, but I cannot get it to work. I enter my username and it appears to work, but ends up giving me a result with no data to show. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong, or a spreadsheet that I can track my historical performance with?
