My Hoya +10 and Canon +4 arrived today, both double element and coated. Funky! So here are some tests. +10 & +4. full zoom, various distances and focal lengths. Nothing too interesting as it is midnite and I'm wacked. Hope you enjoy!

All these images are uncropped and unrotated save for the first image which was cropped along the vertical to be centered, 15% was shaved off the right side. the last image is cropped to tighten by about 5%

' . substr('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/ahmyeyes.jpg', strrpos('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/ahmyeyes.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I shot my desklamp while it was ON! at 1/2000 F8 and got the element (13mm high)

' . substr('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/thumbprint.jpg', strrpos('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/thumbprint.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I shot my thumb print (7mm height)

' . substr('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/star3.jpg', strrpos('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/star3.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

and some origami stars (4mm width each)

' . substr('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/rawmoth.jpg', strrpos('//www.asjarra.com/files/images/rawmoth.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

and a moth (8mm high) on the outside of the window, crappy setup and really difficult to get the DOF and focus to love each other and be happy.

~

Can't wait to get outside to some flowers I spotted on the weekend. Having a hard time with dead insects, the DOF is like 4mm at F8!

I need a 300D yeah :P Damn G5 only goes to F8, oh well. no I love you G5.

Leaves my wondering if I should risk another +10 hehe... or maybe +4 but wondering about the distortion... any thoughts?

I've used a +10, +4, +2 and +1 in some macro shots and do not recollect any distortion. I was also thinking of another +10 to see what I could get but haven't yet. Would be interesting in hearing if anyone has tried it.

f/8 on your G5 already has a lot of DOF compared to a DSLR. Remember small sensor digital cameras have much more DOF than their bigger brothers....

Oh, and great shots BTW! Have fun!

Could you linky to these seemingly very cool items? Are they just filters?

Or you could try a reversed lens. Here's a thread on the topic: //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=71719 I've read this has an equivilent effect somewhere in the range of a +25 diopter (on this page).

Don't know where Shoebox got his, but here's the B&H Photo page for close-up lenses. (Select a filter size to narrow down the list.)

I'm in Australia, so I got my close up lenses from www.center.net.au

$130 for the +10 Hoya and $140 for the +4 Canon.

A pretty expensive macro solution compared to the reverse mounted 50mm I could pick up on ebay from anywhere to $60 - $150.

Looking back I am glad I went with diopters because I can switch between +4, +10 and combined +14. I'm using a Canon G5 with a min aperture of F8 :( and I don't want to work with the paper thin DOF of a reverse 50mm. If I had a 300D then maybe it would be healthier for my sanity working in +25 at F22 with a reverse 50mm but until that glorious day I will be content with +14 and a DOF of 3-4mm!!! Ouch!

~ Oh I just read Adrian's post. Sounds like 3-4mm is as good as it gets! Sorry! ...hm

Maybe I should try a teleophoto adapater, thanks for that link Scott!

:)

Jarra.
