One of my 2008 goals, listed on my profile is to lose 60 pounds and take a self-portrait. I have lost 14 of that so far. The going is slow, but I figure it took me 13 years to put it on, it will not come off over night. :)

Here's what I would like to do. Over the past few weeks I have been a part of an "online" challenge for another group. We each contributed to the "pot," then posted our weight losses or gains each week. Next week, the "winner" will take home the "pot." (Not me, btw) I know this group helped me to stay accountable to myself and knowing that I would have to post each week helped me to stay with it, even when I didn't want to. I didn't lose much, but I didn't gain any. :) Sadly, that group decided not to continue.

So, dpc'ers, anyone want to skinny up with me?

Here is how it will work. The "challenge" will begin May 2 and go through August 2. Each Friday, you will simply post how much weight you either gained or lost.

On August 2, we will post our total amounts lost. The winner will then choose a charity, and all the "losers" will contribute $5 to that charity. (I don't want to deal with real money, hahahahah).

To begin, set a goal of an amount you would like to lose by August 2. (Keep it real and healthy, please. From what I understand, 2 - 2.5 pounds a week is about as much as you want to lose healthily, though some can do more.) Our challenge will run 13 weeks.

Post your name, and how much you would like to lose in this thread. (You don't have to post your starting weight)

Then, on May 2nd, we will begin. :)

(I understand that some people have to gain weight to be healthy. I'm not trying to exclude those. You are welcome to join us, your goal and numbers will just be backwards).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I also thought about tying comments on pictures to it. For example, if I lost 2 pounds, everyone in the challenge would post two comments to pictures in my portfolio. This could get big though. If there are only 4 or 5 of us doing it, no big deal. However, if there are 15 or 20, we will split up into smaller "commenting" groups. The group can decide that.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyone?

Count me in! I'm traveling with my husband while he travels for work, and we are having to eat out, or eat "pre-prepared" food, such as from grocery stores that have ready-to-go meals since we are staying in a small studio apartment with little to prepare food with.

This has made it very difficult for me to stick to a plan, so I really need the accountability.

Thanks!

I've lost 12 pounds since I started rowing not long ago, and am on track for the two pounds per week!!! :-) There's still a long road ahead, however. But I'm going to do it for my wife, kids, and myself! Booyah!

I'm with ya!! I want in!! I, too, need the accountability and the skinny-ing up. I weight more now than I have in my entire life. I did weight watchers at work a couple of months ago and when I make myself accountable, I can do it...but having you guys "shame" me into taking an "after" picture is so worth it! The support is key...and so is moving...let's show 'em!

Lost 70 pounds about 4 years ago, gained 50 back. Been biking to work and have lost 10 so far. Weekly shaming is a great motivator.

Good idea karmat!

Before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, I gained 30 lbs past my top weight. Now that I'm finally sleeping again, I have much more energy and feel like exercising. (Sleep deprivation can be horrible to your body!) So I'm in!!!

I've heard that a "safe" rate of weight loss, especially if over an extended period, is more like one pound/week.

One pound of body fat is equivalent to 4086 calories, or about 585 calories/day if spread over a week. Any combination of calorie reduction and increased energy expenditure totalling 600 calories/day seems a fairly reasonable target to me, and should allow for adequate nutrient intake.

Trying to lose two pounds/week would mean a calorie reduction of 1200/day -- pretty extreme considering the average adult requires 1800-2200 calories/day to maintain a stable weight. It would also likely lead to deficiencies unless you take vitamin/mineral supplements.

Also, the too-rapid metabolism of body fat leads to the production of ketones which must be excreted by the kidneys, and which are toxic (acetone is a ketone) if they build up faster than they can be peed out. This is one of the real risks of the ultra-low-carb diets, as you are only fueling the body with fats and proteins, which require energy to turn into glucose (what your cells eat) but produce toxins in the process.

For perspective, one nutritionist I heard on the radio mentioned that eliminating the equivaent of one Mrs. Fields-type cookie each day would lead to a loss of ten pounds over a year's time.

Down 25.8 lbs. in 13 weeks. DH and myself have climbed onto the Weight Watchers wagon. My husband is down 26.2. I'm out to beat him! Poor man has no idea that this is a competition! I credit my loss (to date) with giving up soda/pop. One of my work friends made me promise to reward myself with a gift when I hit a mini-goal. My next gift will be a new lens. I only have a few pounds to hit that one.

So let's say my DPC goal is 15 lbs. We begin May 2, right?

What a fun idea !!! I had my baby on 2/29/08 and have a handfull of pounds to lose. I've also joined weight watchers so this is just another "tool" to help me lose.

Good timing! I'd love to part of it! Middle age and the frustrations of living in a country, I don't really want to be in, let my middle grow quite a bit. I'd like to loose about 20 pounds, but to stay realistic (and I've never been able to loose weight on purpose, only through illness), let's say a solid 10 pounds until August.

Okay, I am going to totally and utterly embarrass myself and lay it all out there online so I shame myself to actually do something.

(I think I am scared)

Hurting my back pretty badly has led me to not go out there and excersie as it hurts, but to make it not hurt I need to exercise, so I have taught myself not to do it as it will hurt. So vicious cycle.

Bear Music was right when he said I had Jessica Rabbits body type. (just fatter lol)

I am 5.10 and 195 pounds, the ideal weight for that height is 150-160

Gulp here goes

46\34\43

So basically I am all boobs and butt.

So my goal is to lose 35 pounds

I've been working on it, but I'm OLD, ANCIENT, DECREPIT, etc. etc. I am the poster child for the old saying that 'if I knew I was going live this long, I would have taken better care of myself in the 60's and 70's.' Even my portfolio pictures are OLD now. I have to kick myself in the posterierre (which I am obviously unable to do)to get going with that as well.

You youngin's take heed: eat your vegetables (grow your own if you can), stay away from (too much) sugar and salt, make your own wine (oops, did I say that out loud?)and don't try to fool Mother Nature..... She knows best.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, Karmat. I have my check set aside :)

Ok, here I go!

I don't have a big amount of weight to lose, but I want to drop at least 20 pounds. I am 5'8" tall, and I weigh 153. I am 3 pounds down - I was 156 last week. Still a lot to go though. My goal is yo be at 125. That's what I feel comfortable at.

I haven't taken my measurements yet, but I will - I just wanted to respond to the post, and say "I'm all IN!"

Off to eat something bad for me.

haha. just kidding!

Just a quick note, everyone...great goals, I applaud all of you for your effots, but do remember that muscle weighs what, 4x more than fat...so though some unwanted stuff is bound to come off it will be replaced (hopefully) by nice lean muscle. Maybe go more for loss of inches than actual poundage?
