I have this addon to Firefox that's called Geotool. It tells you in what country the server/webpage you're visiting is in. Ever since I joined in March it has been in the US. But today it says the server is in the UK. Was it moved during the last site update two weeks ago?

Anyone else have this addon installed?

This is a concern!

It sounds like some sort of conspiracy by those damn Brits. WTF are they up to!?!?

We aren't Brits, we are Britons, or British. Humph.

They're still using Sargasso, I think they always have. It's a UK company with a US network. The IP address belongs to Sargasso, which is UK based, but that doesn't mean the server is there. In fact, the name of the hop just before traceroute dies (a router not accepting pings) is gi0-48.dist01.nycmny02.us.sargasso.net. I think the server is in the US.

Edit: there's a master database kept by information tooling companies that lists IP address ranges and their countries of origin based on the location of the entities that owned those ranges. We're in Toronto, and have had our IP address blocks for more than ten years, but we kept getting inquiries about why our servers were located in Mexico. It turned out the entity who had the blocks before us was Mexican, and this genius of a company keeping records didn't update their database. They did after we pestered them.

Are you saying that Americans aren't capable of running their own web site hosting companies?

Maybe I'm saying that the Brits don't know how to run a network? ;-)

Ok then, must be that router screwing up the addon's search. Thanks Louis.

Just to be clear, it's not a router, it's likely because the addon looks up the location of the IP address based on the company that has control over it. So it thinks the address is in the UK, since Sargasso owns the network the address is located in -- even though the machine with the address is physically in the US.

Sorry, I'm tight-assed about such stuff. :-P

I was told not to call UKers that. I know a few Scotsmen that didn't want to be called a Briton or even British. Irish and Welsh too. Must be a local thing I figure.

That's a whole'nuther kettle of fish. I am English, and will put up with being called British. Scots and Welsh are also British (some reluctantly), but the Northern Irish are just Irish. Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain. The United Kingdom refers to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Clear and simple?...

Not to mention that the 'British Isles' consists of the islands of the UK and Ireland. :o

But yeah, it's generally better to call someone Irish, Welsh, Scottish, or English, rather than 'British'

Scots and Welsh don't like to be called British because we invaded their green and pleasant lands (and because the English are clearly a superior race - jealous ;-) Having said that, the Scottish National party is nearly in power so it's only a matter of time before we wave goodbye to our Haggis quaffing neighbours.

Although as my Scottish girlfriend points out - I don't know what they're going to do for an economy... but they don't need the English. No really, they don't.

I don't see what the Issue with calling people British is - I refer to myself as British - It's what's written under the nationality section of our passports. Is that not the case with people from northern Ireland?

I think the answer to your inquiries is, history.

People born in Northern Ireland have the option of an Irish or a British passport.

Just curious, what does your geolocation tool show these days? We updated the RIPE records about a month ago to correct the country code to US, and I'm wondering if it has been picked up by these tools yet.

(Incidentally Sargasso was formed in New York in 2000 and DPC has always been in our NY data centres. We opened a new data centre in the UK last year, which is why our registration for this network was in Surrey).
