And what do you think leads to such crazed Puritanism?

Simply decency is always called Puritanism by those with no sense of decency.

HawkeyeLonewolf, I know you like to make these sort of simplistic pronouncements, but even you surely can't believe that it's "simple decency" to arrest people who have photographed their own children in the tub or otherwise naked?

No, it's simply decency not to photograph your child or any child naked.

The story I was commenting on was where the parents hired a photographer to take the shots. I know some grandparents/parents have done it themselves and should not be arrested barring any other abuse, but they clearly need help for seeking such photos.

Clearly? Really? If they hired a photographer then, well, no to that too unless the photographer is known for child pornography.

It also depends a great deal on how old the kids are. Babies? 10 year olds? There's a big difference.

True. There is a difference. Some pedophiles like babies. Some pedophiles like 10 year olds.

Yup. ignore the point as usual.

... to you all parents/grandparents who take pictures of their kids in the bathtub are pedophiles.

You're the one who needs a lot of help, not them.

EDIT: I called you a "poor, poor man" but realize that sounds entirely like a put-down. The truth is your response annoyed me, but also gave me a more real glimpse into how you view the world. And that sincerely made me sad. I think you must have a lot of demons to always be battling so against the hint of sin in others.

I think it's time for me to close up the rant section again for awhile, or at least not to argue with you anymore. I wish you well!

Maybe part of the issue is not really the kids. I think it's more the adults. Not having stuff out there with words like "porno" saves adult the "embarassment" of having to try to explain it to 5-year-olds.

Funny how extreme views are always trying to be validated by their holders.

So if the majority of society doesn't agree, does that mean we're all just foul heathens?

I have to tell you though, if you're the definition of reasonable, common sense, and decency, PLEASE sign me up for the wacko contingent.

I choose not to be discriminatory and engage in denial and censorship.

Umm.....I'd have to disagree with you that it's name calling.

Especially after the stance that the previously mentioned grandparents need help for the candid bath photos and the inference that anyone who might happen to take photos like that is a pedophile.

That is NOT commonplace in my experience.

Rather than know or try to ascertain ANYTHING about the circumstances, he just paints them as pedophiles?????

I never said taking candid photos in the bath amounted to pedophilia, but if you start including genetalia, then yes, there is some concern.

ok so name calling was too specific a term, what i am trying to say is that those kind of statements do do anything in a conversation that supposed to be an exchange of views, that statement quoted above is really just an insult

And yes, you DID make the pedophilia reference in context, so the inference would be that's what you meant by the comment.

A narrow, bigoted and hateful view was held out as common and widely shared. I simply pointed out that it's not and doesn't reflect "common sense". I deliberately chose not to try to engage the person holding those views in a converstaion because it's futile, their mind is lost to their hatred.

Um....after HL bringing his assertion of photographing genitalia into an otherwise innocuous exchange, I could see how someone may arrive at this type of conclusion.

Not really, but if you want to take it that way...

i don't see what all the to do is about. so a movie poster with porno written on it is at the bus stop next to a poster for marlboro cigarettes depicting how tough you are when you smoke. what's the difference if a 5 year old asks about one poster versus the other.

it is what it is - roll with the punches. you have to deal with the blows as they are thrown - or isolate yourselves in a cave...

i was on a school trip when i was around 8 - we went to to see the metropolitan museum. on the way out of town the bus driver got lost and we got stuck in traffic in a part of town loaded with peep shows, sex shops, and other 'dirty' things all over the windows and walls. an unforeseen and uncomfrotable event from the shaparones perspective i'm sure. were we all forced to put on our emergency blindfolds ? no. we were told we had gotten lost and ended up in a bad part of town. we were told not to lean or hang out the windows. we were told not to talk to anyone outside the bus. and we were told that much of what was to see out the window wasn't appropriate for children, and to try to act mature. ( of course the last bit failed to sink in ).

to expect every potentially controversial poster, movie, magazine ad, internet pop ad, tv commercial, etc. to only be accessible when you as a parent feel the time is right is absurd. and in my opinion you and your kids will suffer in the long from this type of mentality.

knowing what porno means doesn't turn your kid into a porn addict. a 5 year old knowing what sex is doesn't mean they start having sex immediately. in all liklihood they child will be more capabale of making a rational and informed decision should a situation arise down the road when a parent or other adult isn't around to intervene.

no i don't have kids - but i can still clearly see when parents act a bit irrational.
