The Masters challenge produced a slew of outstanding images. I won't get into which (relatively) unoriginal shots were overrated IMO, because they ARE all well done, for the most part, but I'd like to get the ball rolling by highlighting a couple of (relatively) non DPC-friendly images that didn't receive their due, IMO. I'd love to see others' ideas on this as well.

' : Ecce Signum had the stones to shoot a pinhole image! And what an image it is! Ethereally soft, sea-as-womb, almost magical for me in its sense of "otherness". I really like this one.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/945/120/743291.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/945/120/743291.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' : JJ Beguin, a master we all miss, spared no thought for sentimentality, pulled no punches, shielded us from no reality, as he photographed his gravely ill mother. This is one of the most heart-wrenching, powerful images ever entered in a DPC challenge, I believe.

Let's see YOUR candidates for underrated Masters. I have many more, but nlet's open it up.

Artistically I love the way the image leads the eye downward but priceless in terms of showing a youthful innocence.

I gave 'My bounty is as deep as the sea' (William Shakespeare) an 8, as well. I agree with you there.

I'm not sure who's image this is but I personally thought it deserved a 7 and should have been on the front page....

That was another one I would have posted if I didn't want to preempt the process from others :-) Heck of an image.

I thought this one was absolutely brilliant - clever wordplay on the title, made me look at all the intricacies in the setup. Very imaginative shot.

Oh, me too! I probably spent more time looking at that one than any of the other entries, it was fun to get "into". I gave it a 9.

Thanks everyone,

I was really pleased with the outcome, but disappointed in the score. The comments are awesome. Anyone care to say why they scored it low? I might try it again sometime and would appreciate the constructive criticism, as ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/user_id/17203.gif', '/') + 1) . As much as I liked going through and checking out the detail and setup, I have to say that what I was mostly thinking while doing so was how much it could have benefited from some my dynamic lighting and angles. In the end, it just came off as relatively flat and for all the detail it had, just didn't have any extra.

One of my favorites

It has been said many times that "A picture is worth a thousand words". Not always true. But this one is IMO fully qualified.

I agree, this photo is in my favorites and well deserve a ribbon. unfortunately isn't the typology that win on DPC....

I gave you a three because I thought artistically it was very bland. The concept was fun but in terms of Photography there's not much there. I generally don't vote concepts high especially when the artistic elements of photography are secondary to the image. In other words, the art was in the set-up or pre-production and not the photographic execution.

To take it in a different direction, I find that many Ribbon winners (not always, of course) are flat/boring photos taken of cool ideas. Technically sound and quite safe but photographically sterile. And to push it another step further, I view many Ribbon winners that are set-ups, as taking pictures of existing art...or performance art, in a sense. I'm more interested in the photography.

Well, I really scored you very low. An 8. I'd have given you a 10 but there were other images more impressive. But..... I really liked what you did. And I think your idea of more MB's and more depth would really have been great. Some kind of texture on the water would have helped too. But heck, I spent a couple of seconds trying to ID the city before my mind informed me I was looking a tech stuff! What more can you ask? Oh, that's right, a higher score. :P

The shot above was one of my top 3. I also really loved this portrait and think it was very underrated:
