I'm not usually one to gripe about scoring, but I was surprised at the statistics in my Hidden Gem photo.
15 x 1
10 x 2
19 x 3
22 x 4.

= 65 votes of 4 or below.

but also 15 x 10

overall average 6.2389
Holy cow batman! Why so many such low scores? Just doesn't make sense to me. I try to give scores of 4 or below to out-of-focus badly processed poorly composed photos that don't meet the challenge.
I guess it didn't meet the challenge.

Your commenters really loved it. Your detractors probably didn't want to see a colorful paper shot. It does take a lot more talent and effort to get these things to work out well than most people realize!

I know it's some time ago, but this

Honestly, I think my shot is the most appealing and technically best of the three. Any explanations?

Might have suffered from a bit of "seen it before, nothing new" - I voted higher than you got BTW.

Oh, Peter, you can give me the 15 tens if you don't want to have them, I didn't get any ;-)
(You can keep your ones, I don't need more than the one I got.)

I'd say there simply is diversity in opinion, and tastes are different.

I had for instance comments on mine expressing they liked the twigs, and others disliked them. Some found the road in the background added interest, and some found it distracting.

I find it very interesting to see how the same picture is seen totally different by different people.

Thats the thing, its been seen twice before so loses the initial wow factor.

Yeah, as opposed to deers in the forest (BTW, congrats on your 10th, and I didn't vote it lower just because I knew it was yours as you entered a similar shot earlier).
Or about 200 subjects that placed before mine. I rather suspect huge loss of detail on lot of uncalibrated monitors out there.

a. 'Splash shots' are much more common now?
b. The higher number of voters meant the score you got was more accurate then the previous challenge entries?
c. Compared to the other wonderful images the voters this didn't really stand out and was voted lower as a result?
d. It's not as good as you think?

Of the 500 or so votes there are 500 or so reasons, and this result is probably the most accurate of all challenges due to the high participation rate.

Well DPC Is a tough site! Shots that amaze elseware sometimes fall by the wasteside here. though I have not entered many challenges here, I do have friends that do...

Take my entry for example...
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=771734

I am not unhappy with the outcome, but to think the same shot that came in 38th out of 1114 here,
beat out 200,000 photo entries to gain entry into Parade magazine...

I like to think mine was pretty unique.. yours is pretty much an exact duplicate.. find me another shot like mine and I will agree with you.

Still, the voters have spoken I guess. Try not to be too bitter mate.

Generally a nice shot, but has no wow factor really, it doesnt seem sharp, the lighting seems flat. I see what you was doing with the border, but you relied on the border and the title to get the point across. If it wasnt for the border it would be no more than a snapshot really.

Thay may be true, though I did not send in a black and white cropped version, but the version I posted here,
That Is what was judged and selected.
But that is neither here nor there. I was only trying to give an example of how a photo can do well in the eyes of
one set of judges, and other judges as the voters here on DPC are judges, can see things differently.

This should not take away from what one feels about there photo in which they are proud of.
A wonderful photo in the photographers eye, Is a wonderful photo period. Scores here should not be take personal, but should be all in good fun..

As i said, I liked your shot and it deserves it's high placing. And I'm not bitter, I don't care much for scores anymore, I was just quite surprised. To say my shot is just a duplicate is pretty harsh IMO, the idea of course is not new, but that is true for 99% of all shots on DPC.

I do prefer this crop but Angela & I loved this shot during voting and surprised it didn`t do better.
