Can we have yet another call please to stop voting based upon making a decsion regarding rule violation.

I had a couple of comments and I suspect that I picked up a number of low votes because some people decided
that I had infringed the Basic Editing rules with this shot

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1050/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_799807.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/1000-1999/1050/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_799807.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This image was verified by SC and I also have a mail from SC stating that selective colour desaturation/saturation is legal within Basic Editing.

Some people will always vote as though they think you've violated a rule. Can't stop that. And some people just don't like selective desaturation. All that said, you scored well and placed well in the challenge. Do you like the shot? Did you enjoy shooting it with your son? Then fret not one or two low scores - definitely not worth the rise in blood pressure.

IMHO 5.9 is a fairly high score on the site

yes that is a bummer, Will.

I too (along with lots of others) have felt I got the short end of the stick with exactly this problem but I don't know what can be done save for the promotion of voting based on the ASSUMPTION the photo is valid... that or have a pre-validation process for those that think their photo may raise eyebrows, but if that were not too cumbersome it probably would have already been implemented.

Key comment here I think. I wouldn't have given it above 5, as I absolutely detest selective desaturation in all cases. I didn't vote in this challenge though.

I gave it a 6 even though I suspected a white dust spec had been removed. :P

Even when it's a natural consequence of the composition, subject, and lighting?

How about this case

' . substr('//i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq169/lutchenko/redcoatgirl.jpg', strrpos('//i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq169/lutchenko/redcoatgirl.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I think that whatever your thoughts are on selective desaturation most people would agree that it can be used to great affect.
Here in Schindlers List it makes for a very moving and powerful scene.

By the way I'm not trying to compare the pic of my son on his bike to this in anyway just before anyone makes the comment.

I like the selective Desat....it's the distracting colored lines you chose that would have lowered the score from me, had I voted.

Now this is a very good point.
I don't know if anyone else found this, but looking at the entries I think they did, but when trying to do the motion panning I generally ended up with
a shot that I couldn't crop as I would have liked due to other stuff creeping in that I didn't want.

Will I think he means the god awful yellow line you added top and bottom (your border break) ;)

F181 lol.... that even makes a pinhole camera look like it has shallow DOF eh

I get hammered on all the time by the "I don't like tone mapping" people. You just got hammered on by the "I don't like selective desat" crowd. Welcome to the world as I know it :-) (AKA: DPC)

Oh, then there is the "I don't like humorous entries in a serious topic" crowd. I get some 1's from them.

I think the thing I hate the worst is when you get pinged, and a comment to that effect, and they're WRONG!!!

If you're gonna bust somebody for a violation, PLEASE actually read the rules so you don't bring someone's score down because of your own ignorance.

Sigh.....

I think you got a fair scoring, and looking at the distribution of scores, you got jsut as many scores on the high side of your average as on the low side. It doesn't look at all to me like you drew low votes... at least other than generally lower on average than you expected, but I regularly experience that as well ;-)
06/24/2009 02:05:51 PM · #25
As a precaution against this type of voting, you could've titled it:
"Yellow peril (selective desat is legal in basic! Look it up, a-hole!"

Then again, you'd be dinged by the "I hate overly explanatory titles!" crowd (of which, I am a member)
