I've decided not to self DQ because i've had a couple of interesting and useful comments - but I'd like some more please because I really struggled with this challenge. I felt I had a good theme and some decent photos (on their own) but wasn't sure on the composition.

Anyway, keep the comments coming please, all gratefully received :)

Hi Adam, I've only been here since July and have also battled about getting comments but I've since learned that my entry has to be remarkable to get lots of comments, mediocre to get a few and hopeless gets none. I normally only comment on other entries where I've scored them 7+ or if I have absolutely nothing else to do...

Check here and here for advice on commenting.

Thank you for the links, very useful. Although I'm not an experienced photographer, I will consider those guidelines when i have time to comment.

I this case, I'm really after some technical help on the best ways to compose a triptych. I've gone through both previous competitions which have fantastic entries - as does this one - but I just don't seem to have the 'eye' for this. Still, fingers crossed for some more comments. I will be trying to improve upon my submission based on the advice.

Cheers

I think a triptych has to tell a story to be any good allthough it could also just be a landscape/seascape split in three. Vegetable and flying ducks triptych's also do well in the massmarket stores...look around.
There are now 3 Triptych challenges at DPC, check them out for ideas.
Composure* can be the Rule Of Thirds and theres a challenge for that, 99% here and I include myself like sharpness. Do a snoop around in the old challenges for eye candy and then read the photog's own comment.

Self DQ because you haven't gotten enough comments??? At that rate you'll self DQ on all your entries. If you are second guessing your entry because of the composition, well that's no reason to DQ yourself, you just make better choices in the next contest. What I have found is, enter what you like and don't try to enter what you think will win. That seems to work for me. AND you'll have images in your portfolio that you are proud of. : )

To me, photography is, to a decent extent, about familiarizing with what you think looks good; more specifically why it looks good. Commenting helps greatly when it comes to making these determinations, because it forces you to break down aspects of each photo and figure out what is and isn't working. To this end, commenting itself helps you as a photog, not to mention who your comments go towards.
I think everybody can tell what images will score well for DPC too. You just need to figure out what does and doesn't work for it.

Ah sorry, that's not quite what I meant to imply. I had previously posted in this thread about self DQ because I was not happy with my submission. So the reason for considering the self DQ was not about the number of comments. In fact, it was getting a couple of helpful comments that pursuaded me not to self DQ.

I spent the last couple of hours before the deadline getting nowhere with the composition of the three pics (which individually I love) and so I've never really been pleased with it. I feel now that having accpeted that I've not done the pics or my intentions justice, the best thing is to try and get some help and guidance so I can try to do it justice when I try it again.

I know what you mean, I also love my three pics individually but they don't really work as a tryptic. But it's a learning curve, I'll certainly try and do better next time. The amount of comments you get certainly isn't an indicator as to how good (or bad) your pic is. However, when you do get them, try to take on board what the commenter say's providing it's constructive. Stick with it, you will be surprised at what you can achieve, I have been.

I don't think I've seen such a strong set of images in a DP comp before. Glad I didn't enter!

This has to be the weirdest voting that I've ever seen. Yesterday, I had a chuck of 11 votes that averaged 7.27. Today, I had the same chunk, 11 votes, that averaged 4.72!

Had made it up to 5.8, which was where I was hoping to be, but back to

Ahhh thanks for the clarification. It's important to me to submit what I personally like because I have to live with seeing it in my portfolio. I was in a side challenge several months ago and had to submit to challenges I wouldn't normally enter, in order not to let my teammate down (we were paired in twos). So, because of this, I do have some images that I would LOVE to yank out of my challenge entry folder. <sigh>

As per my triptych image - it's totally underrated (4.98) but I personally love it. : )

Has anybody else's score gone into a freefall in the last 24 hours?

I've dropped from my 17th all-time highest to my 26th.

Ewww. That's actually where I expected mine to be. Right now I'm at around 6.11, down from a high of about 6.23. Believe me, I'm not complaining, at all.

Some really good entries. Mine's squarely mediocre, even though I haven't checked my scores. Off to next week's challenge...

200 vote check-in. I'm still either making a hit or really missing with people. I'm getting 7s & 8s some 9s and a 10, yet many 4s.

I could have done better, but I was having fun with one of my lenses and forgot to change things up. But I still like it, so I'm glad it made it up to 5.8!

Didn't enter.

But just voted the entire challenge.

These are among the BEST and MOST CREATIVE images in a challenge for some time.

Congratulations to the great photogs who entered!!!!!
