Last autumn's Holga side challenge was fun, but I know I didn't really participate properly due to time constraints and finding somewhere to actually develop the film (not brave enough to try it myself). So, I was thinking it may be fun to try it again during April. I figured if I posted mid March then it would give ample time to get prepared.

Holga Side Challenge Nov 09

I enjoyed using mine so much, but haven't really picked it up at all since the autumn. The side challenge would perhaps encourage me to use it!

Anyone interested?

Me certainly! Maybe spring will be a little more conducive to this type of challenge -- warmer weather and no looming holidays. I had a hard time getting this off the ground last fall. From experience, Sarah, I suggest that you bump this regularly and send invitiations to last fall's participants (at a minimum).

Here's a recent shot of mine to give folks a taste of some of the quirky and unexpected results you can get from a cheap film camera.

I have film! I have a cheap plastic camera (courtesy of Brian)! I don't have a scanner, but I can get lo-res images on a CD from the developer. Hopefully that will suffice. I also have a couple of nice metal cameras I may play with - not toys, per se, but film!

Good idea Brian, I'll drop them a line.

Yay, Deb can play too :)

If you can go to Costco, you can have the film developed (no prints) and then scanned to CD/DVD at a resolution about the same as a 6MP camera, for about $6.

I might just have a similar setup myself -- have to look in a couple of storage boxes ...

If you have a scanner and are able to scan negatives -- Target will process the film for ninety-five cents and return the negative to you (obviously). No scanner? For an extra $2.50, they'll give you a CD.

No excuses, folks!

I've been shooting film only. So, please count me in! :)

Would this be too modern?

It's not my call, of course, but personally I think it's not a good fit for this particular side challenge. Why not start a pinhole side challenge? They're always popular. And I'd sign up for that too.

Count me in. I have a bunch of old film in my freezer being heartlessly neglected and will appropriate my wife's Lomo that is gathering dust in her closet.

Fair enough! Count me in here though. I have some film that I bought for my Dad's old Mamiya so I'll dig up a Holga.

ooh great to see some new faces for this one. Sorry I haven't updated the original post I'm on vacation and not having so much online time.

I found one of these for $1 at Goodwill this afternoon (was actually hoping for something with a cartoon character on it), and a roll of Fuji "Superia" that expired 6 years ago.

There's a roll of Fujicolor on my desk that is probably at least that old. I bought a film scanner a few weeks back. I'm in.

That's a trip, Steve. Last summer, I waltzed into a Goodwill store with the exact same intentions and waltzed out with the exact same camera for the exact same price. I regret to say I only shot one roll of film with it, and didn't get anything too exciting (sample 1, sample 2). A few weeks later I found the Photoflex MX-35, and it's been my favorite lomo camera ever since. (Although the past few weeks I've been having fun with a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim.)

I think you'll have fun with it though. I really didn't give it a chance, but the pictures I got are relatively sharp and some have a subtle vignette. Best thing about it, though, is the size and weight; you can almost carry it around in a shirt pocket.

Dropping of the first roll out my Holga tomorrow

ETA: Any tips on scanning the negs? Film used was Kodak TMax 100. I have an Epson flatbed, 3170 Perfection Photo. It has a slide/negative holder for medium format. Links to useful tutorials?

If you have the holder and the scanner, the biggest challenge should be getting a clean scan. An anti-static cloth helps. Be careful if you use canned air; it can leave a residue (and it's not very economical).

Two good resources:

I actually got some images, which surprised me since I screwed up the 12/16 slider. I haven't cut and scanned them yet, but there is something there with a whole lot of funkiness.

Keeping el-cheapo in the car. I've shot a few pics, but not anywhere near a whole roll yet. Going out to the Stockyards this afternoon though.

I might keep an eye out at the thrift shops and pawn shops for something even junkier.
