I took many shots of broken windows, signs, torn awnings, plywood windows, etc., but this seemed to make the strongest statement. I did not place the paper there, and I was very surprised to see it, because the building has been condemned for almost two years.

Ryan voiced exactly what I feared would be the reaction to this image.
This shot spoke to me as a sign of the times (no pun intended). There are so many foreclosures in Florida, and throughout the country, and so many abandoned properties.
The house across the street has been empty for more than two years. It is in shambles now, with broken windows, torn awnings, plywood falling out of the broken windows, police dept. signs saying "No Trespassing" and "Condemned". And on the front steps there was an old soggy newspaper -- so out of place.
So while I took many photos that were obviously of an abandoned building, this shot of the newspaper summed it up for me.

sorry for being the voice of the nay-sayers in this case. :(
after seeing the scores thread with so many people wondering why their scores are so low, i decided that i was going to try to comment on either the 'true to form because' or 'i dont think it fits because' aspect on these images for the sake of people wondering "what are voters thinking", and "abandoned" is a general enough concept, but it really does have a connotation of value attached to it.
Based on your description, I get why you picked this shot, but wonder if maybe the bigger house with the newspaper still in scene wouldn't have resonated better with the community. I'd love to see some of your outtakes if you had any of the houses
it looks to be moreso 'discarded', and as i see it, discarded differs from abandoned in that discarded items contain no past, present or future value. this looks to be a newspaper in a plastic bag which holds no substantial value.
and while it may be on a set of steps in a state of minor disrepair, it does not constitute an overall image of abandoned to me.
