Giovanni Schiaparelli was the Italian astronomer who saw circular and linear structures on Mars and named them "canali" (channels) in Italian, which translated to "canals" - artificial structures. Hypotheses and speculations followed, giving rise to the notion of intelligent life on Mars - the Martians.
