Challenge: Backlighting (Basic Editing I)

This was a real learning experience for me. I've had a set of (2) Alien Bees studio strobes for several months, but really haven't had a chance to do much with them. For this challenge, I used the B400 through a white umbrella and the B800 bounced into a silver umbrella.

For backlighting, I resurrected two old Honeywell Strobonar 200's - one aimed into the back of the lantern from just below the covered stool on which I placed the lantern. The other Strobonar was used to light the plain white backdrop.

...I'm now on better speaking terms with my lights.

Post-processing was limited (of course!) to auto levels, selective colors (lightening the whites) and unsharp mask in PS7.

I'd like to see what you would get with just this lighting. Eliminating the front lighting which far overpowered the back would make for a far more effective backlighting photo. Otherwise, because it was such a quality photo to begin with I gave you a 7. Had this been in a still life challenge, you would have gotten a 10 from me.

Very crisp and clear and fantastic detail but perhaps just a little to big.

An interesting subject, and a nice setting, but I don't see much evidence of backlighting.

the light looks like its coming directly overhead...not backlit at all.

In my opinion there is no backlight enhacing the value of the subject, there is a diffuse lighting! Nice object and good focus.
- UPDATE: I was wrong with my backlighting idea, it should not be a direct source. This was one of my first votes in this challenge.

Doesn't appear backlit to me. The shadows from the bottom of the lantern are being thrown to the back. I can see that the lantern is lit from the back by the glare on the handle, but the front and top lighting are overpowering the backlight. Still a very nice photo very simple, crisp, clear. I do like it. 5.
