If you don't get up everyday and live your life to the fullest possible, you will never know. Every person has worth. Don't let yourself be owned by your misfortunes.
I had opposing thoughts in my head when I took this. When I saw the man, I didn't want to take his picture from head-on, as I didn't want him to feel I was "exploiting" him in any way. Obviously the man has been through a lot. I almost went over to talk with the man - when the light changed, and he went on his way - motoring across the street. I had a split second between passersby to nab this shot. From seeing the man, who probably struggles day in and day out, I felt like this particular proverb fit as a good title.
Composition-wise, I felt like the foreground placed the viewer at the scene, while the slight hint of a cross walk helped the user know where the subject was, while not overpowering the scene. The "one way" sign points in the direction of travel. The only way is forward, onward. The man slowly makes his own way... getting up once again - moving on.
I hope others see what I saw in this image. The human spirit persevering.
I shot this at f/5, despite it being a 1.8 lens (was having issues earlier in the day with missing some shots). So I didn't get great bokeh like I wanted. So I just had to fix that in post by blurring the BG a bit - just to get some separation. I also lightened the bg some, so that the subject stood out better against the dark vehicles. |
