A pattern of simular shapes recurring at smaller scales .... could be (in my view) a railway track.
I took this shot on the Fort William - Mallaig (West Highland) Line just after passing of the steam train (called the Jacobite Steam train, but nowadays better known as the Harry Potter train).

I opened the JPEG-file in Adobe Camera RAW and adjusted exposure, recovery, blacks, fill lights, brightness, contrast, clarity, vibrance and sharpness. After opening the picture in PE9 I did some dodging on the tracks and, after cropping and resizing, added some more sharpness to the railway track with a high pass filter.
