Didn't turn out as I wanted, but realised that I only had a few hours until submission!

My idea was to have a upstanding dead leaf with a plenty of shades of brown, showing lots of contrast, but having a vivid green stalk and veins gradually turning brown. i.e. 99% dead but with the remaining 1% being very much alive. I wanted it against a black background with only the leaf showing. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the light right to give a black background (was shot with a grey wall behind), and so cropped the picture.

I don't own Photoshop and do all of my editing through Lightroom 3. Although I like the program, it doesn't allow you to select isolated sections of the picture to ammend the colours. To get over this, I used a green marker pen to draw on the stalk. Unfortunately, that created some highlights which I couldn't seem to edit out.

If anyone has any solutions to my problems, please do let me know. I'm a begginner in photography and could use some tips! Specifically,

1. How to get black background but with leaf illuminated (i tried a candle but didn't work).
2. Alternative ways to get the green stalk.
3. Any other.

as to your question: You could try illuminating the leaf from behind.

A favorite line of mine. This is a beautiful leaf, but it looks like you used flash to light it, and that flattened the textures and colors
