 59% waning gibbous moon. Perfect for illuminating the scene without washing out the stars.

This is a 10+ minutes exposure. I tried some 30s exposures at a higher ISO, but the exposure was not balanced and the electronic noise was painful to me. I also did not like the look of the stars at 30 seconds. The earth rotated enough to make them look like I had shaken the camera.

Just found out the meteor shower a 4 am had a name. It was the first meteor shower of 2013....The Quadrantids, peaked in the early morning hours with as many as a hundred shooting stars per hour. While they don't show on my image, there were lots.

There is kind of an odd effect here - the stars look closer than the ridges. I know it's perspective, but you don't see it presented this way that often. Nice image.
