Challenge: Stranger In A Strange Land (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-F707
Location: Glen Hilton Park, Hickory, NC
Date: Jan 5, 2003
Aperture: F5.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 13"
Galleries: Abstract, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jan 5, 2003

How: I set my camera up on the tripod and composed my scene. I put my Hoya R72 Infrared filter on the camera. I set my exposure to F5.0 and 13" at ISO 100. I set the timer on the camera and moved into the scene. When my shutter opened, I counted off 8 or 9 seconds and simply walked out of the scene to create the ghost effect. This is not a double or composite exposure. Post processing includes: Autolevel of the original image, +25 on contrast, convert to bw, add tone via hue/sat, resize, add border... nothing more... I expect DQ requests on this image because of the lack of understanding of Infrared. I have the original image ready upon request...

Initial thoughts
Interesting idea, a little too white at the top right.

Composition/ Content
Ghost idea is interesting though the expression on your face is a little grim – I would think a ghost would be happy to enjoy such a pretty location!
The area is pretty but I don’t think black and white does anything for it – on this occasion it makes the image seem dull or slightly life-less – perhaps with a ghost in it that is the idea!
I like the triangle made by the lower edge of the frame and the fencing.

Background
Background is kind of foreground as well! I find it too light in the area of trees at top middle to right.

Camera Work - Technical
OK except exposure/ lighting.

Digital Processing - Technical
Seems fine.

Fits The Challenge
I have no idea – I can’t figure out from the assigment page which challenge this is in and I have had a quick look in Landscape for Lost Soul and can’t find it.

Your Opinion On The Photo
Reasonably interesting, not one I̢۪d be looking at again and again.

EDIT: OK I went via your profile page and it's from Stranger ...
Yes it fits the challenge.

Great use of infra-red to give a really 'spooky' image. I think maybe that as in all good portraiture, it would be better to have less of a sharp sunlight/ shadow region on your face, so that it all registered but that is pretty minor. Very effective picture. (8)

The only thing of this photo that's bothering me is the fact that the strong bright part of the fence at the right seems to be in front of the person and therefor kinda disturbs the transparancy. Besides that, a very good photo and effective usage of IR.

Well taken photo and nice effect. I had been hoping for more out of this world type strange-ness, this is closer than most. 8 Swash

What a great illusion! Your photo gave me an instantly sad feeling, because the ghost image of your model makes me think he's no longer living. It took me a second to remind myself that no, he's (hopefully) still drawing breath. Great picture!!

Beautiful setting for a photo. Lovely composition and choice of tone. The figure is strange and kinda freaky looking. Excellent idea though. GL

Good job john. That can't be easy in the day (use of a black card?). Good luck.

Good picture as far as the landscape goes, the subject just doesn't fit when I ask the question, Why is the apperation looking like he is posing for a picture?

great mood in this. I like color choice, not sure about angle though, or maybe too closely cropped to the corner.

I like it! You're in my top 10 this week. I like the fact that this was done outside without flash or light control.

I love the tone used. This is a VERY unique idea and well done. Thirds and leading lines. This is what photography is all about. Great photo ! = 10
