Photographer’s Notes
I’ve been planning this shot for weeks; the Milky Way over Mt. Rainier; angles, bearings, altitude, sunset, astronomical twilight, moon, ISO, aperture, shutter. Lots to get right. Nikon D3’s low noise at high ISO was great. D800 might be 1 to 1.5 stops better at this.
Software that helped: The Photographers Ephemeris (iOS), Sky Safari (iOS) and on the web; Astronomical Twilight Calculator; Lat/Lon calculator.
It was 42 degrees at 6,400 feet at 12:46 AM. Dark! Cold! Calm!
The lights on the mountain itself are climbers’ rope teams. Climbing Mt. Rainier’s glaciers works best when they are frozen hard so most ascents occur after midnight.
RESIZING THIS TO 800 PIXELS IS A CRIME AGAINST NATURE.

• Exposure (PSCS5 + 1 stop)
