I get the concept, but I think more could have been done with either perspective, lighting, shadows, coloring, etc.

Not sure what you were going for here, but it looks more like twigs to me. The white tanks(?) in the background do not add anything. The lighting is rather harsh, maybe try a different time of day to get softer shadows and more detail.
