Do not expect this to do well at all, but it did get me off my butt to shoot so any score is a good score. Don't love it, kinda like it, predicting a 4.x who knows maybe it squeaks over a 5. That's ok. You get out what you put in, and I didn't put much in to this shot. Hopefully it will serve as a reminder and a benchmark as the year progresses.
For me this is just about composition. The exhibit was crowded inside and out, so I was only able to get two quick shots off before others walked into the scene, ruining the composition. The Good: I like the echo of her scarf with Hockney's suspenders, the way he appears to be looking at the women on the bench, the triangle of shadow above them, the horizontal lines of path and grass and the tree at the right to anchor it all. And I like how their heads perfectly obscure the words "Store" and "Cafe" on the sign. The Bad: A little crooked. The women's expressions and poses are boring and don't say much -- others entered, they left, and the rest of my group was heading inside so did not stick around to wait for a better moment. The Ugly: I don't particularly like the harsh light, but its a midday shot and minimal editing so whatcha gonna do.
fwiw, the exhibit was pretty cool to see ... recommend a visit if it comes to a museum near you -- interesting stuff, even if some is a bit, er, hackneyed. |

| don't beat yourself up. the elements are so incredibly strong, and the light is Hockneyic. And yet it is a relief from Hockney hisself. And it is candid/street. I wish I had seen all this when I voted. (and the K-01 - I like it more and more, but the shot-to-shot or burst-to-burst is certainly the molasses it's said to be). |
