Some people actually eat lunch on their lunch hours. I walk. I have an office job in downtown Pittsburgh, and come twelve o'clock, I can't escape fast enough. My constitutionals have taken me all over -- sometime I get so carried away that I have to take a bus back to the office. I've never cared much for boundaries.

Of course, I often bring a camera along, and I'm partial to a cheap little film camera called the Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. It has exactly one control (the shutter button) and when loaded with film, it's roughly the size, shape and weight of a half-full box of Altoids. It sometimes rattles like one too. Unobtrusive and unassuming, it's the perfect traveling camera. If I see a picture I want to take, the camera is there. Otherwise, it's not. I can enjoy my walk.

The camera does have its quirks (in less appreciative hands, they might be called faults). It requires light -- lots of it. The super wide angle lens flares and vignettes and distorts. Since there are no controls to fondle, the emphasis is always on composition. But the viewfinder is far from precise. Point and shoot is all there is. Cross your fingers and enjoy the anticipation.

This photoessay is about exploring. And making snapshots. And leaving something to chance.

I love photographs because a few rare souls like you get to carry a camera and do it for love.
Nobody strips photography to its essence like you do. If the authorities ever introduce camera control (and I often think they should), you can have an unlimited carry permit.
