Northern Shrike, Lanius excubitor. This is a predatory songbird. Rocky Mountain National Park, 01/16/14. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, f/8, 1/1250s, ISO 400, lens focal length = 400mm. Based on winter ranges, this is a Northern Shrike, rather than a Loggerhead Shrike. The Northern Shrike is very uncommon to rare.

Predatory songbird - sounds like a contradiction. I didn't know there were such things. Pretty bird - I like the pattern on the chest.

Richard, yesterday I commented on this Northern Shrike saying how I would love to see one. Well today I was out and took a picture of a bird I have never seen before. The other photographers didn't see it and when they looked at my screen they ran t see if they could find where it went...Yup a Northern Shrike! Thank you for sharing your luck with this bird!

I've always loved Shrikes; the idea of a predatory songbird resonates with me. Lovely capture, and quite the rarity.

He's posing. I like how the line of his back leads right up to his eye.

Beautiful image. He's looking right at you and seems entirely unconcerned... I have never seen one of these up close. I love the lacy feathers on the chest.

Butcher bird! One of my favorites. Have only seen a northern once, and not for not trying. That was before my camera carrying days unfortunately. I'd kill to get a shot of a shrike of either variety while it's eating.
