True memory. Not my earliest, I've used that before, the needle for the spinal tap. But a couple years after that, in the woods with my father at Fallen Leaf Lake, I came across a dead furry critter, maybe a woodchuck, I don't know. I poked it with a stick, got quite distressed, and begged my father (the omniscient one) to "make it move". I was crushed that he couldn't.

I found this gull yesterday and flashed on that, so here we go...

The bits of grass, pebbles and shells at the bottom make it look like the bird is actually taking off from a tree - last flight perhaps?

I was one of your 10's. This happened to me with my oldest son when he was 2. I remember exactly where I was standing in Queens, New York, when he poked a dead bird saying, "Fly! Fly! Mammma...make it fly!". I realized then and there that I was to decide how to handle a very important topic.
