Photographer’s Notes
This is a bittersweet photo for me.
It was taken last fall in London. My wife and I had flown into London, saw a couple of shows, rented a car and pointed it north. The signs said “The North” so I deduced the direction. We arrived in York to spend some time in the Yorkshire highlands when I got very very sick.
I ate almost nothing for 7 days. Everything I attempted to eat came out one orifice or another in unnatural consistencies. I was so tired, it seems all I did was sleep … one day for 16 hours straight … another for 20 hours straight.
On the 3rd of the 7 days, I rallied enough to drive up to Twice Brewed, near Hadrian’s Wall, where I relapsed. Couple days later I rallied enough to drive to the Lake District, where I relapsed again. Finally I seemed to feel barely well enough to eat a little and hike a little.
We drove back to London and flew home. Still not feeling very well I visited my doctor who prescribed a stiff dose of antibiotics and within a week I was back to normal. What I had, you're not supposed to get in England, but I digress.
This photo was taken from a window in a shopping center, Liberty I think, but it might have been Fortnum & Mason. I was resting on a bench while my wife’s credit card hemorrhaged and took the shot out the window because I liked the frame and with shallow depth of field the blurred background.
It’s bittersweet because I like the photo but little else of our vacation trip. Well, the pre-sickness theatre was pretty great!
