Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Night Shot II (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Olympus C-8080
Location: Chicago, IL
Date: Oct 15, 2004
Aperture: F8.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 10 sec.
Galleries: Cityscape, Water
Date Uploaded: Oct 17, 2004

I was taking pictures of the skyline with Lake Michigan in the foreground, when my wife pointed out a nearby puddle that was reflecting the city. The water in the puddle was so still that it produced a near mirror-like reflection. I put the camera directly on the ground next to the puddle.

Post-processing: rotate, crop, removed a bit of litter in the puddle, levels, variations, blur

The city of Chicago should consider this photo for their Chamber of Commerce web site and/or literature. It's a stunning image.

I'm coming back to leave another comment on this photo.

It is under rated, and deserves to place higher.

You never know what makes someone give a 3. especially 14 of them :(

It's a great photo, I'm sure you'll nail a ribbon soon!

Hard to see that this is a puddle because of being so close up and the angle. Really great idea. Nice reflection.

Overexposed for my taste. Interesting composition. (5)

i think your exposure may have been on a little too long. the image would be sharper and more pleasing to the eye if it were shorter

Nice golden tones but a touch too overexposed. Regardless, a good image and bumping up.

I really like this and am bumping it up. I hope you win a ribbon. The yellow really makes it pop out. I wish it was a little sharper though.
good choice of color :)

IMO the shot is too overexposed. You have lost a great deal of detail. A few seconds less, may be best.

Somewhat over exposed by at least 1.5 stops

Nice photo, the lights seem a little too bright for me.

this is very good. my only point of real criticism is your inclusion of the muddy bank - it just seems to clash with the very smooth stylish elements of the rest of the picture. i like very much the colours (all browns and yellows) but one thing i might suggest would be to play with the contrast on the buildings - they just seem a smidgeon bit washed out / greyish to me. the water is so smooth - you did choose a perfect evening for taking the shot. it's lovely - 8.

WOW! I love this! Colors are fab, excellent sharpness in the reflection...the sky looks a little too bright, especially as compared to the reflection...but I'm diggin' this so much! 10!

Uhh what the bright night! Its pretty well done...just longs for bit more sharpen... And would croped out last building at left...would give more finished looks for compozition.

I like the subject and composition of this image but IMO it's just too bright. I just recalibrated my monitor so I don't think that's the problem. First I respect artistic integrity. You may have intended it to be ultra-bright. But in case that wasn't your intention, I did play around with a copy of your photo a bit and a levels adjustment would made it more dramatic and toned it down a bit. I tried 50-100, 1.0, 255 across the RGB channels and got results more to my liking. Hope I didn't offend you. It's just my opinion after all.

This is a great location for this photo and a nice shot for this challenge. I think you could have captured the reflection just as well without so much overexosure, so you might want to take more shots around this area with a bit less ISO or lower shutter time. But the composition is really nice and you sure picked a great subject to shoot.

I think it's overexposed, but I like the composition, maybe you should have cropped out the building far to the left.

Beautiful gold tones. I have this picked for a top 3. I think I would have liked the composition a bit better if the line of lights had been less centered. 9.
