Challenge: Candid Portraits II (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Date: Dec 28, 2014

A truly wonderful woman -- my husband's grandmother. Though she's mine as well. I adopted her the moment I met her.

Taken at Christmas after a full afternoon of food and presents. (the bear is from her great-granddaughter. A bear from the college she's attending. (the great granddaughter, not great grandma. :))

Here is the not candid shot:

The entry was taken later, after a big day and while we were trying to get her new TV to talk to the controls.

She is 96 years old. And yes, in response to a comment: she is definitely very well loved.

Thanks for so many comments. It seemed like there was a story to tell here, even though it's not what appears to be the obvious story. :)

Well composed, but a bit unflattering for the lady.

A top five image IMHO. Love the vacant eyes and sad demeanor. The toy suggests a hospital setting with someone in the O.R. Good story encapsulated in this image.

Elegiac portrait draws you in. Sad, hard to look at. What lives we lead.

I felt really sad looking at this image. There seems to be a lot in those eyes (emotion, instrospection?). I hope this woman is well loved. I wondered if a crop zooming in on that gorgeous face might have made for an even stronger composition?

So, did you tell the fine lady to not look at the camera?

She looks so terribly sad, even with her new friend.
