I think he's right - if the contrast were better, this would work much better. The value range is skewed towards the greys and whites, which results in a washed-out looking image. Especially where soft focus shots are concerned, having good value is important. |

I knew that this shot would be rediculously underrated, but this is horrible. You should have been at least in the top 10 percent, not way down here near the basement. Please keep up the good work and don't let this first entry get ya down. Like I said below, soft focus is NOT appreciated here like it should be. If you look at any fine art b/w magazines or shows, you'll see shots like this all the time. DPC, as fine a site as it is does NOT represent the world of fine photography...
Yours (hopefully for some time)

I want to thank everyone for there thoughtful comments. Interesting thouhg, the disparity between people who liked the softness and those who don't. What is an artist to do? :)
Nephrotic: I would gladly welcome any suggestions |

Focus is kinda soft here, DOF a problem. Had it been sharp I think it would have done better. |

I like the soft effect that you have achieved here! I'm sorry your getting bad scores/comments because of it. Most here don't get it. I know, I've tried...

I like the composition. If I were still selecting pictures for publication I think I would consider using this. My only thought is that it lacks "punch" and a the woodburner seems slightly out of focus and it seems that is where the focus should be. There seemed to be a lack of black. I put it into photoshop and moved the sliders around - it makes a huge difference. I would be happy to email my changes and see what you feel. Definately has commercial potential

Nice black and white but it's a bit out of focus or otherwise blurry. |

The soft focus makes it look like it was taken with an old box brownie, I like it. 9 |

I liked this photo when I saw the thumbnail edition. When I opened it up to see the large picture so I could get a good view the subject still trapped my attention. But it does seem to be to some extent out of focus witch was disappointing. But a good photograph. |

It´s a bit on the soft side, not neccesarily a drawback but it sure doesn´t help this shot. A bit average so I gave it a 5. |

Nice scene you got here, it would have scored much higher if it was more in focus. Almost looks like the camera was handheld when the photo was taken and you got a little shake happening here. Over all, you have a really nice photo. |

I'm not sure if its intentional but it seems a bit out of focus. Very nice otherwise. |

Whats wrong with the focus? Is that intentional... I think would be intersting to see it in detail. |

Unfortunately the bad focus ruins the good picture. If the softness is intentional, it does not work here. |

took me a second, but I got the inference. Good shot, but It's a bit disapointing. No real depth of focus, as there's no real focal point, and everything is middle of the range in tonality. |
