Sorry -- should read, "I had no problem with this . . " Obviously I do have a problem with English tonight. :-)

I agree with achiral. Though i did comment on the contrast of light and dark, I had not problem with this being a transition. I just assumed the fire was the catalyst for the transition.

transitions result in contrasts...and for the record, the building pictures that were in the top 20 are most definitely not true transitions, they are contrasts, and no one had a problem with them. interpretation was the key here, and you had to stretch your mind and realize that fire and ice is a transition, just like all the rest. by the way, nice job, i also did thermal ice and some were saying this about my picture. doesn't make sense to me. anyway good job on yours, your colors were better than mine

thanks for all your comments. for the record, the transition i was going for was from cold to hot. thanks to all the idiots who said it wasn't a transition. i'm well aware that water never actually turns into fire.

i fall into a trap in these challenges because i use a very bright flat panel monitor at home that always shows a lot more detail in the dark areas of the photo when compared to other monitors. i'm going to have to alot for that next time i take a dark shot.

Very cool photo! And your technique didn't fall short of the cool idea :)
04/27/2002 08:43:00 PM
The objects say "opposites" to me, but the action and the and visual quality satisfies "transition".
04/27/2002 03:59:00 PM
Um... I think this is a contrast, not a transition. Sorry.
04/27/2002 01:09:00 PM
i like the contrast of the light vs the dark
04/27/2002 10:58:00 AM
oooooooo funky burning ice. Is it frozen fuel of just water ice with some fuel on ti?
04/26/2002 04:47:00 PM
Cool picture but I think there is just a little too much black on the left. Fire and ice are seperate elements by the way. Ice to water would be the transition but that's not the emphasis here, the fire and ice is.
04/26/2002 02:20:00 PM
I myself would have tried to save more detail (if any) in the flame, but can also see you might intend a transition from the detail in the ice to the softness of the fire.
04/25/2002 02:35:00 PM
dupe, but still good
04/24/2002 05:22:00 PM
While I like the attempt at an unusual composition, I think I would like it better if it were a little more centered.
04/24/2002 05:12:00 AM
Nicely composed. I like the way you have the lighting set up so that it fades into darkness.
04/24/2002 02:30:00 AM
i really like the composition, and the detail is fantastic. the exposure seems a little bright but i dunno how much you could darken it.
04/23/2002 08:06:00 PM
Well done, but a bit empty on the left. Maybe this would work better as a vertical shot?
04/23/2002 10:45:00 AM
interesting depiction
04/23/2002 08:21:00 AM
good! but methinks a tighter zoom would work better
04/23/2002 01:44:00 AM
I like this its very appealing to the eye
04/22/2002 09:22:00 PM
where is the pyramid of ice?...jk...those flames look like they are coming out of thin air, and the coloration is cool
04/22/2002 08:20:00 PM
nice concept, but I think I would have liked to have seen the ice cube and fire a little more centered. The left side of the pic looks too dark and blank
04/22/2002 07:40:00 PM
Great shot! I like!
04/22/2002 07:32:00 PM
I would love to know how you got the fire right there.
04/22/2002 02:38:00 PM
cool idea although i think that you were outdone.
04/22/2002 02:10:00 PM
The other ice fire was better
04/22/2002 01:03:00 PM
Very nice. I can see the melting ice cube as a transition but it seems the fire is only there for dramatic effect.
04/22/2002 11:48:00 AM
Very inventive!! Very creative - nice work!!!!!
04/22/2002 10:41:00 AM
Nice shot, what's burning? Is the fire a reflection?
04/22/2002 10:35:00 AM
I was thinking of trying something similar but realized that I was out of ice. How does the fire work into the transistion.
04/22/2002 10:34:00 AM
Cool shot
04/22/2002 10:30:00 AM
Mediocre. Great shot though.
04/22/2002 09:32:00 AM
wow - cool effect to get the ice looking like it's burning - lots of lighter fluid ? Great concept - too much empty space on the left though - maybe a vertical shot would have been filled more and caught all the flames ?
04/22/2002 08:26:00 AM
As per your title: Fire & Ice are "contrasts" maybe, but not "transitions"...

As per the image and melting ice, the ice melting to water is a good transition. I will vote on it from that perspective. Work on those titles. :)
04/22/2002 08:00:00 AM
Nicely done.
04/22/2002 07:53:00 AM
this is too typical for my eyes
04/22/2002 07:34:00 AM
Not sure I like the large dark area on the left
