 So I just don't have any people to take portraits of, and I am still not comfortable shooting strangers on the street. (And I wasn't sure if I could get something that would meet the definition of a portrait by shooting quick from a distance). Does portrait mean a head shot only?

That is what I kind of thought, so I figured drawing one was my best shot at meeting the challenge.

Oh how wrong I was.

But you guys have no idea how much fun I had creating this shot. Total blast. (The image was better with a bit of processing where the chalk came out as actually white against the blackboard, I'll insert my edited image later.) I see one of the top 5 managed to get the chalk white despite minimal editing - I tried and tried but had no luck, although I was shooting in the dark and my lighting apparatuses are somewhat less than idea.

I don't think the edited image would have done any better, but it'll likely go down as one of my favorite shots of the year.
