Brown kiwi taken at our local bird recovery centre. He has lost one foot, caught in a trap. Nearly recovered now and is almost due to be released on a remote pest and trap free island where he'll hopefully add to the breeding population.
Kiwis are the symbol of NZ, they're a very shy, flightless bird with poor daylight vision and an inability to protect themselves from predators. Mainly to be found out and about in the bush at night. They are becoming less common as man encroaches upon their native territories. There are large breeding populations of them established in remote areas and on islands throughout the country. They are a protected species..........it was a priviledge to be allowed to take his photo.

Kia ora!

This is an excellent shot, I love it. I got marvelous opportunity to see one of these little guys at night in the wild when I visited the South Island. This is an excellent shot, well composed. None of the factors that would improve it were under your control (the bit of green stuff by his feet), however the shot seems to have sort of a bluish tint on his head and back, maybe I'm just crazy. Either way, excellent capture, probably the best picture in the challenge.

poor exposure, otherwise a very bizarre critter. I would have cropped tighter.

Great shot of a really unusual bird. It's a little dark in the background but I guess that's not the main focus of your shot!

I wonder if cropping the shot so that your subject isn't right in the middle would give it a less static feel. Otherwise, very bizarre :)
