This is my beautiful niece and goddaughter Anna. She was born June 22nd last year and in this shot she is almost 1 month old. She is a very happy baby and I am so glad I got to spend some time with her and her equally beautiful sister before moving back to Australia.

This is probably not my best picture from 2015, but it is one of the ones that means the most to me. I know that entries of babies/kids don't always do so well, particularly in free challenges, but I would love some feedback on what I could have done differently. It is perfectly fine if it is not your cup of tea and you say so in a comment. I will continue to go all gooey on the inside when I look at this image.

Hello from the Critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge

You could stage manage these sort of shots but what you have here is the sort of image that shows Anna in a way that you can easily imagine and remember her in your unfortunate separation from her. For that reason the dummy becomes acceptable though I do agree it would be nicer to have seen all her features without it. What is vital in any portrait is to get the eyes nice and sharply focused and that's exactly what you have done and your shallow DOF has placed all the emphasis on that eye which makes it a very effective image. I like the mono processing.

You have got some good critique from patches and I can understand what he is saying but I actually like it the way it is, but what really matters is that you have a very special image that will always mean so much to you so DPC and scores are really quite secondary.

Well done, thank you for your entry.

In My Opinion:
I agree with Lydia about the pacifier. Also would that sweater(?) she is wearing show her off to better advantage versus the blanket?
I would love to see both her eyes - could you have propped her head on a pillow to get a better view or maybe just taken the photo from a lower angle?
How did this look in color? Baby colors are usually soft and (to me) they enhance any photo of an infant - it might have made a difference in the voter's eyes.
Anna is gorgeous - my Annie's photo (my beloved Cocker Spaniel) is my favorite in my portfolio even though it's my lowest scoring photo - so I know what you mean about your feelings for this shot. Hopefully you'll be able to enter more photos of her in future challenges.

Anna is ... gorgeous!

But... I fear that there will... never be.. an image with a pacifier that I will love.

It's plastic in a beautiful face.

Yet still... I know that she is loved...
