I used the hideous HDR function in the camera, but it was apparently too exciting.

Oh don't be sorry--this is delightful. I hope you do more of them--keep on taking advantage of in-camera HDR, your camera is helping you. Look how rich & lively the tonal range is--not a flat grey anywhere. The implied movement adds additional interest. I would be very pleased to capture this.

In my opinion this may have been better in another type of contest, it really doesn't look that impressive as far as HDR goes.

So... did you actually take this image... several times... and combine them to give more of an "HDR" image for the challenge here?
