Lightmare from Painting with Light II, by Albireo from way back in 2006 was one of the first pictures I saw on DPC that made me say wow, there's more to photography than I understand.

It's images like this that made me join to learn.

Has the site changed? Sure. Have the people changed? Sure. But the basic idea behind the site still remains, challenge people to learn and get better at digital photography. I've still got a long way to go and I've come to realize that sitting here and complaining about the rules doesn't get me better, it's only an excuse, a reason not to try. Yes the voters can be harsh and the lack of comments can be frustrating but if I just keep shooting and producing to the best of my current ability I'll learn and progress, maybe someday I'll get a medal.

I still come back to the original Lightmare photo to remember what I liked about it, I read the comments to learn what others saw that I didn't. I keep trying to get better.

Another long exposure self-portrait, first curtain flash with AlienBee 800 fired with cybersync, once flash triggered, got up turned on flashlight and drew the monster. Chimped the image, tweaked settings (learning from the original I had an idea of the settings to start with but changed them a little to fit my situaton). adjusted camera position. Repeat, repeat, repeat until happy or in my case I ran out of time and energy to continue.

Like the photo, but this suggestion may be difficult since it wasn't a photo that brought me here and I suspect that's the case with a lot of people. Perhaps something more randomly chosen (a photo by the photographer who finished immediately above or below you in your last challenge?).

What an awesome idea for a real challenge!!! I don't know if I remember any one specific image, but this is genius. Really well done.
