Well this will be my first picture submission, and im not expecting anything, anyways the stone measures 9mm by 7mm and is from another one of my hobbies (lapidary), it was taken on black felt which i had laying around for another project, and lighted by one 60w incandescent(a reveal bulb), and one 20w halogen desk lamp at about 14 and 20inches away, i also was using tiffen +10 and +7 lenses

Only editing that was done was cropping and sharpen at 250%

I don't think there's enough creativity on this. I mean, does it take much skill to place a piece of opal down and photograph it?

The beauty here is lost by the dull wirey background. Also, there seems to be vains of dullness in the opal itself. Not bad, but I wonder how it would look with a different background and a greater DOF.

beautiful stone, but the background is distracting. a simple black or white backdrop would do the subject more justice.

Try experimenting with less centered flat-on compositions to try and add some interesting elements to the photo.

I was going to do a gem or rock picture for this challenge. And then I realized how boring they looked.

The composition is a little boring with it being right in the center as it is. The substrate that it is on has a pretty strong texture and detracts for the opal.
