Challenge: If I Were an Animal (Extended Editing)

[Jan. 26th, 2017 08:53:14 PM]

I only had two choices: squirrel or cat, and I'd already kind of did a cat... Plus, I think I'm a little more squirrely than catty. ;)

I figured that people would be mostly looking for a blend of an animal and person face, but

1. I really didn't like any examples of this and

2. No way did I have a clue on how to do it!

So again, the lighting intrigued me. I saw these examples on pinterest, and thought the were absolutely wonderful!

examples

I'm still trying to figure out how they get the wonderful vibrant yet sedate colors. Simply stunning.

So I started out putting my lights outside to see if I could get dramatic squirrel lighting. This is one of the out of the camera shots I managed to get with the light.

It was about 5 hours of setting up and then waiting. He really didn't like a light with a big softbox. It took a long time before he came down.

He would flinch a bit when the light flashed, but it was so quick, he'd look around and not see anything wrong/different, so he'd stay around.

I made the mistake of editing the squirrel shot to how I wanted it: (obviously a different shot)

and then I took the dreaded self portrait, thinking to edit that and then put the two together.

Nope!

Big mistake!

It needed to be put together and then edited all at once. Crap.

And then my squirrels have brown heads but grey hands and feet! Seriously?!? Don't they know that it looks strange with you put it together with a person? I kept trying to add a little brown to get it to not look so disjointed.

Come on, squirrels!

I agree that the head looks small, but unfortunately, that really was the size of my head and body. Sad, isn't it? Or was Mariuca simply saying that she thinks I have a big head? ;P

Thanks for all the comments!

Yes. But I imagined a bigger head. The rest is beyond my expectation. Quite an artsy fartsy look.

Very well done. My only reservation is with the use of the black background, which tends to obscure the black pants and to a lesser extent, some of the fur in the tail.
