Male Redhead. Aythya americana. Lake Estes, Estes Park, CO. This time of year, fall migration is done. Spring migration is not yet started. So, these are year-round residents. They are diving ducks and were having good luck finding plants in shallow water. Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM +1.4xIII, 1/640s@f/5.6, ISO 400, lens focal length 560mm., 02/15/17 9:10am.

Lots of DNMC votes. I guess the red of this Redhead male was not red enough for some voters. I'll admit it is rufous. But, that is a red in my book.

I do agree Richard, that is definitely a red in my book too. However, the dominant colour here is the blue, its the first thing that hit me because it is spread throughout the image and whilst reds are normally so powerful in attracting your attention, the red here is secondary to the blues. In itself it is a lovely image, well executed with nice sharpness where its needed on the ducks eyes. I like the DOF and the nice soft foreground and background but I would prefer a less central composition, a diagonal using one of the hotspots would have greatly improved the end result. The standards of the rest of the entries need to be high to justify the placingâ€Â¦? I've only just seen dtremain's comment, I agree.
I'm sure that the score does not reflect the quality of the shot, which was primarily based on the DNMC'ers. Not sure how you give this a 1 even if it doesn't meet the challenge. Beautiful reflections, sharp focus, great textures, Even added interest with the plant in its mouth. IMO, it deserved a 7 at least!
Maybe the blue reflections took the perception of the head more towards brown than it would be otherwise.
This shot makes me want to go shooting at that location!
Thanks for sharing this great image.
Very interesting! I decided to google it and I see they are called redheads - learn something new every day:) Nice detail and I really like the reflections in the water as well.
