Challenge: Black & White II (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: San Diego, California
Date: Nov 11, 2004
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/50
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Nov 13, 2004

A deer from the petting kraal at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, taken at close range with a wide angle focal length (21 mm, equivalent to 34mm in 35mm film) to exaggerate its features.

Converted to black and white using a hue/saturation adjustment layer with a levels adjustment layer to help control the mapping of colors to tones. Used USM with a large radius and fairly small amount to increase contrast without destroying shadow detail, then USM with normal settings to bring out the texture of the fur.

Really impressed with this one once the full sized image loaded. The picture is extremely sharp with all the detail in the fur you could hope for. Some small elements in the background are just a bit distracting but not much and what could have been a boring photo really turned out great.

Your picture is nice and clear. However, it isn't really the sort of picture that is better in black and white than in color.

the lump of stuff on the ground is a bit distracting, mainly because of the blown out parts of it.
