From the Critique Club
Hi Mark, how's Shoreham?
The first thing I though of when i saw this (and I didn't vote - lack of time, lack of finding myself a pattern to vote to) wasof oils on a wet surface - that slight sense of bleeding into the surrrounding areas, yet keeping the definition of shapes to it. i'm not even sure I can really critique this - on what grounds, from what standpoint? Photography? But this challenge, in its results, and very largely in its entries, was almost entirely about tricks and photoshop, or even both, rather than about photography, in my view.
There is a definite sense of the photograph in this, however; in that it's clearly twisted into its present form from a photograph.
There's little to criticise in the composition here - a very solid dpc-type image, the kind of thing that usually does well here: a strong sense of subject, strong and pleasant colours, strong sense of mood. Perhaps you might have had to make the mill a definite silhouette, rather than the darker area with some sense of detail that I'm getting here - it seems rather a halfway house at the moment.
As to impressionism? I'm by no means convinced that anyone made a really good stab at taking the idea into a photographic realm, really. I'm not sure, either, that it wasn't an impossible challenge. some folks have had a definite sense of what is and what isn't impressionistic, some folks tried to imitate the stle, some to develop they're own version, a version taking things forward. The retrograde step seems to have worked best, and the simplistic, most obviously derived versions to have done best of those. But we should all have known that, given that our ribbons should mean that we know our audience ...

Very nicely done. Not exactly what I think of as "impressionist" but I liked it, and gave it a 10. I especially like the fact that the sunrise (or set) is peaking out from behind the building. |

I like this image. It has a painterly feel to it, almost like NeatImage was applied very aggressively. Composition is lovely and effective. |

I think your original photograph must have been quite spectacular. I am not fond of the posterized look...I would rate this higher if you had approached the post processing from a different angle. |

This is a beautiful shot. The colors are warm and inviting and the effect of 'washing out' the detail (no wood on the side of the mill, the grass all blends as one) really works well. |

Almost looks like Windmill in the desert. |

An attractive windmill picture with just the right amount of filter to give it that impressionistic feeling. Well done. |

A good composition with nice colours. The post processing is good and it does not destroy the image. The tones in the ground and behind the windmill are wonderful. I don't know if the roof has a jagged edge but it seems like a resizing problem. Congrats. |

well, this is interesting...i guess i'll go on and call it a stunning composition! the colors are gorgeous, and i really enjoy the negative space. i'm not sure, but i think i would like it more with a hint of motion blur. i'll give this at least a 7. thanks for the effort. |

While the sunset is stunning, I'm not as taken with the rest of the photo. My eyes keep getting drawn to the black edges along the top of the landscape and the jaggies on top and along the back of the mill are unfortunate.
I do like the way the glow is shaped to fit around the windmill though - very nicely done. |

returning for comments:
Now, this is a lovely image and it abounds in great blending of hues in the sky. This very beauty is the antithesis of the impressionism style. Bumping up on great colorful image because regardless of the challenge it is a a very nice image. |

Don't care for the overuse of a PS filter, which looks like the dust & scratches filter, or median blur filter. I'll bet this was a gorgeous photo before the PP. 2 |

Colors are magical. A bit tight on top but too negligible to be marked down. One of my top picks. |
