Challenge: Where's Waldo? (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Indoors
Date: Feb 7, 2003
Aperture: 3.6
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/50
Galleries: Black and White, Studio
Date Uploaded: Feb 7, 2003

To achieve this effect I nailed a transparant lace curtain to a light colored wall. While hiding behind the curtain, I pressed my head and arms against the curtain so their shapes would kinda become part of the curtain.

Using the self-timer, I took about 50 shots before I got one that showed the effect that I was looking for.
BTW: It was good excercise to get back in position behind the curtain within 10 seconds every time :p

Converting the photo to B&W removed disturbing colors while the unsharp mask enhanced the structure of the curtain.

Greetings from the Critique Club };-)

Initial thoughts
Fantastic shot, one of my faves this week, meets the challenge

Composition/ Content
Personally when I originally saw this shot I loved it. I really thought it was a ribbon winner. I like most everything about it. The softness of the lighting and tones give it a haunted look that is very appealing.

Background
The lighting is excellent but there is one spot just above you that is a bit hot. I'm not sure you could have done better though.

Camera Work - Technical
Focus seems good and the contrast is excellent for all of the white you have here. I know that some folks didn't like the squares in the cloth where you leaned against it but I think that adds to the shot.

Digital Processing - Technical
Once again, nothing of consequence to improve.

Fits The Challenge
Definitely fits the challenge well.

My Opinion On The Photo
I was tremendously surprised to see that my shot finished higher than this one. I am a big fan of yours and this shot in particular. Keep up the great work.

I would be happy to talk further about this shot if you would like to contact me.

Thanks a lot for the comments and votes.

The description of this photo tells how it's done. Just want to add to that, that I used a 500 Watt worklight on a stand at about 4 ft distance.
I did try some shots whith a more soft lighting and with the light at a longer distance, but it made the image look flat and less dramatic.

Really well done, I love the B & W and the feel and tone of the shot. Great job, one of my favorites this week.

I like this. Good job! I appreciate the barely there appearance, and the composition works well.

You need to pay attention to details, such as a straight and smooth background. That would have improved this photo immensely. You need better, more evenly distributed light. Personally I don't like the way you hid Waldo. But that's just me. It's nothing like the Waldo books way of hiding him - out in the open but so hard to spot, among all the other people, places, and things.

I really like the simplicity of your picture. One of my top picks this week.

My fav foto this week hands down. Love the folds in the draped sheet. A small thing , but I personally would like the hands portion a tad more off centre. Another very minor quibble is the squarish texture embedded in the sheet. I find this attracts my attention and diverts it away from the power of the delecate figure. The concept is superior to most of the shots of this week. Technically a very good shot. Tons of expressive power in this image that speaks well of your creative talent.

I like this effect, although there may be a bit much in the backlighting - the person is too visible for this type of shot. Nice work.

I like this a lot. Great lines, in both the conceled person and the sheet.

Well done. The texture adds to the illusion. I'd like to know how you set this up.

This is SO good! If people know anything about photography I´m sure you will win this week. Great composition. Perfect in b&w. The low contrast is perfect. One of the best for weeks. Good luck!

Awesome photo. Looks just like a ghost. I like the canvas texture too. I think the light should be a little more even to get rid of the harsh highlight. I would like to know how this effect was achieved.

Lovely! The gauzy quality is really powerful. Such an evocative image, could be interpreted as either sad or hide-and-seek-playfulness.
02/10/2003 02:48:48 AM
Not really.
02/10/2003 01:40:35 AM
Wow! This is really interesting! I wonder how you did this. Great Waldo shot!
02/10/2003 12:50:42 AM
needs a tighter crop on top... I would like to play with the brightness and contrast a bit also, but I like the idea and set up
02/10/2003 12:27:39 AM
An interesting and captivating photo. Almost like something one would see in a movie.
