CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE
by karmat
(I apologize for this being so late; my internet connection has been bonkers the past few days, and I am just now able to connect long enough to do it! :/ )
COMPOSITION
You have used the rule of thirds very well. The flag is positioned on teh left third in such a way to anchor the shot, and the angle of the flag pole is very effective at drawing the eyes up and through the picture. I almost think you could have cropped the moon out, though it is a nice touch, because it is so close to the bottom of the frame, it looks kinda like an accident, and leaves me feeling a bit unbalanced, as the flag is so much bigger than it.
TECHNIQUE
Wonderful use of lighting here. The colors are so "pure" and rich; very nicely done. Taking pictures of flags is difficult, as they don't want to stand still, but you have nailed the technique, I believe. I can think of nothing to do to improve it.
OVERALL EFFECT
You have done very well here, and have captured the majesty of the flag well. It is bold and strong, and a shot to be proud of. Nicely done! |

Great shot Joshua, I think you did a great job at meeting the challenge and this should be a favorite of yours. It should have done better. Keep shooting! |

Oops, earlier I thought there were only 2 American-flag-up-a-pole photos, but there are 4!! As I've said on the other two I've rated, it's hard for me to get over this symbolism, since I'm not American and I'm angry about the looming war. But this is a very strong photo. Of the 4, it's in the top 2 :). |

Perhaps a little more zoom in, to avoid so much extra blue space on the lower right corner woud have hleped. Also I would have preferred a little more breathing space on the top of the frame. |

Wow, I just finished commenting on a very similar pic (No, not cliche - great minds think alike!!) Your shot is better as you didn't crop off part of the flag and you were lucky enough to order (and get) a very nice blue sky. The moon is a very nice touch, glad you were able to leave it in. Focus seems very good. (I can see the flag needs replacing - starting to tatter!) Framing is very good. Lighting works well, I can live with the shadow across part of the flag. 9 Swash |

I don't know how many caught the freedom, even for the flag only hooked on one hook. You and your friend must either stop shooting together or get together on who is going to use which shot. It detracts from each others. This is georgeous but not as outstanding as if woud be if it were the only one. |

is that the moon on the lower right?
nice perspective. focus on the flag (subject) where it should be with the pole in short dof to keep the attention off of it.
nice. |

This takes on a whole new look from this perspective. Very bright vivid colors and interesting choice in flag position. I assume you took a lot more than one shot, I think you made a good choice. |
