what does the chess board have to do with anything? it doesn't even look like there was a game going on, every piece is in it's place

hmm? I seem to remember Spinoza as the system builder and ridgid logic (almost Euclid like) of his Ethics. But I've only read secondary lit. so I don't know. To convey subleties I'd suggest........ Mill, Kant (OK, maybe not in ethics), McDowell (if you can read him), Wittgenstein, and of corse John Duns Scotus....

I do not see teh connection between the titel, the subject and chess board.

Well, I don't get it. Is he reading the book to figure out how to play chess? Also, the highlight on his head and the shadow behind it bother me. Sorry, just doesn't work for me.
