Challenge: Time Passing (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Death Valley, California
Date: Nov 18, 2004
Aperture: f/6.7
ISO: 100
Shutter: >1024 sec - long
Galleries: Abstract, Nature
Date Uploaded: Nov 21, 2004

This was approximately a 25 minute exposure. In bringing out of RAW, I added to the exposure and the saturation. Due to "noise" from nearby lights, I selectively chose parts and did a levels adjustment to darken these areas. I did an additional levels adjustment to the entire image. I again added saturation to bring out the stars natural colors. I resized and used unsharp mask.

returning for comments;
This is a nice idea, but the image does not sing enough. However, the capture is good. Bumping to 6.

Wow, I like the idea and I like the photograph. Give it a 8.

Clearly time is passing and it is an intellectually interesting idea, it doesn't hold my interest as a photograph.

This image works to meet the challenge; however, I have seen it done so many times. The color is a nice touch, which makes it a little edgier. I would have changed the angle by moving the North Star off center, something to make it seem fresh.

nice idea, when I first saw the thumnail it looked like one of those timeless clasics of the lense cap. I bet you had fun taking this one. If it is stars, how did you get all the different colours

Shouldn't all the dots be spinning? I guess most of them must be sensor noise, and median filtering just didn't cut it?

I know just how hard this technique is with long exposure ccd, to reduce noise. You've done a great job of pinpointing the focus and retaining the colors. Not sure if you used layering to increase the saturation or just boosted in PS, but they work very well.
.. To reduce the red ccd noise, boost the shadow a few notches, it does not always eliminate 100% of them, but greatly reduces the effect. Throw on a sharpen after to bring the true light sources back to their brilliance.
