Though I had few expectations going in, I did shoot this for the challenge and thought it fit perfectly, so score-wise the week was a disappointing one. Then came roll-over and a 9th percentile finish. Oh well.
But this morning a comment from [user]streetpigeon[/user} erased any feeling of letdown or regret I might have felt. Thank you kindly, Rich, for your thorough and heartfelt defense of this one :)
Most interesting, to me, is what and where this is. It's the base of an aloe vera plant, interesting in its own right but made more interesting this spring by the fact that it's one of numerous plants currently on display in the conservatory of our local botanical garden because they have "prehistoric roots". The gardens are hosting an amazing exhibit with sculptures of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, large and small, crawling, climbing, and flying throughout. We went twice with our granddaughter, once during the day and once for a special lighting show at night; each time we were pretty much focused on the creatures. But the plants were fascinating, too, so I went back without her to look at and photograph them.
Read (or re-read) Rich's comment with that in mind :) |

This was my favorite image of the challenge, and I'm stunned that it hasn't fared better. It's so straightforward and natural. It has a feeling of primitive fear, an ancient horror of being devoured by a merciless predator. It's in the teeth, the lunging forward, the absolute proximity of death. It's shark-like, but even more so as it's the overwhelming redundancy that establishes certainty, a shocked resignation of the end. The minimal focus also conveys the sense of immediacy, the confusion of ambush. The tones are beautifully graduated and subtle, and then the interior blackness of a gullet. Powerful and imaginative. Upon review I regret not going higher than eight. |
