 The sculpture is "Defense of Fort Dearborn" on the Michigan Avenue Bridge in Chicago. Fort Dearborn later became Chicago. I liked the backdrop of the 8 story flag and the sculpture. I spent a lot of time hanging around this corner on that day. Sometimes, my patience is rewarded. Yes, I was fortunate that they were color coordinated, but it was taken on the 4th of July.

that title is amazing. do we have to wear it just because it fits? Is that really a sculpture of a white man saving his family from savages? directly above a white family protecting themselves with masks? This is America.

Here it's not enough to see and feel the image, we also have to read and think it through. The irony of contrast is terrific. A tender domestic moment is surmounted by a huge battle scene, European interlopers crushing the native Americans, of course. In the name of flag and righteousness. How perfect that the couple are coincidentally wearing red and blue. These notions fill the atmosphere and float the photo into a very interesting realm. The compositional axis of meaning flows along the upper left to lower right diagonal. Nice title.

(An aside: Has anybody noticed an upswelling of support for returning the land to its prior, shoved-out inhabitants? It seems history depends on where you slice it.)

I enjoy this image probably as much as you did when stumbling upon the scene. The questionable pathos of our times and the anecdote go hand in hand, under one flag
