Thaipusam is a mostly Tamil Hindu celebration held in the month of Thai (Jan/Feb) to celebrate Lord Muruga. The celebrants prepare for months in advance with the final weeks of preparation including abstinence, fasting, and prayers.

In Singapore where this photo was taken the celebrant walks 4km between two temples supporting a kavadi (burden) in this case an elaborately decorated shrine that is supported off their body with piercings.

Celebrants are guided and helped by friends and family and at certain parts of the procesion the celebrant dances jumping up and down while spinning.

It's an amazing demonstration of faith of the abilities of the human body.

A few more images of Thaipusam, this is a choice for both men and women to decide if and when they want/need to participate. Some never participate some perform it every year.

you show what is unbearable as abstract. but not. are we glad such a celebrant is helped by people jumping up and down while spinning? I feel ignorant, and possibly in need of a drug I have never heard of.

so incredibly extreme .. makes me wince looking at this image .. great in black and white .. could be a bit gory for some ppl in colour .. :)
