I realize this image is very sad and will likely not be well-received by some. It was the end result of a long, difficult fight.

The little guy was very, very ill. The vet gave it his all & tried to save him & the foal fought for a while and was done. The owner chose to spare him any more suffering and made the hardest but kindest decision to let him go.

There is a bright spot to the story... a day or two later the mare, still with milk, went to live with an orphan that lost his mother. That foal had been basically force fed to keep him alive and He was so, so depressed when we got there I was really worried for him if they didn't bond and it was a slow process but the mare helped him survive and even thrive.

In my voting this came 7th place, a very sad and desperate picture really. Tugs on anyone that knows what blue juice is and has been there. I am so sorry about the brave foal. The ending for the poor Mum though is happy as she gets another chance. Sorry you guys had to go through this.

Thank you. The image is truly the epitome of despair in my view. I knew it had the potential to totally bomb (which it did) or do very well as composition-wise it's a very good image and it's processed well but it just hits too hard to get to that other side. It's totally authentic but could have been easily staged as well.
